How I Reduced My Waste in 2017Reusable mug, reusable grocery bags, reusable produce bags. I was using these before 2017, but I upped my game. I try to remember to bring the mug to Starbucks when I go.Started using cloth napkins. Bought fun new cloth napkins to help the habit stick. Bought Sonja cute cloth napkins for her lunch box.No more wax cups in the bathroom. During the remodel, I bought tiny rainbow colored glasses that live in the new medicine cabinet.Cloth snack bags and storage bags. The bags are great for Sonja’s lunch, but I’ve had trouble with storage. They definitely don’t work for bread, too much air gets in. Cheese got moldy.Beeswax reusable wrap. The Beeswax wrap works much better for cheese and saving avocados and covering bowls. I like it a lot, but the website states you can use it for about a year, and I think that’s a little low for the price. Wish it were less expensive.Homemade zit zapper. Rather than spend a bunch of money on a favorite beauty product, I made my own and it works great. I put it in an old chapstick tin. Bulk spices. I spent some money over the course of several months buying spices in the jars I like, then I would buy cheaper spices and put them in the good jars. Then I found the bulk spice aisle, which is not only more eco-friendly, but saves a ton of money. I love it. Brought my own tiny cloth sack the last time I bought oregano.Toilet paper in bulk. Bought a giant box from Amazon. Came in cardboard with each roll wrapped in paper. No plastic! TP itself is recycled.Reusable menstrual products. This stuff changed my life. ‘Nuf said.Do-not-mail list. Paid $2 to put myself on the DNM list.Paperless bills. Somewhat unbelievably, not all my bills were paperless. I didn’t even realize I could do that with some of the local ones. It’s all set up now, and I’m looking forward to ditching my shredder.Cloth make-up removers, instead of the disposable kind that come in plastic.Bamboo toothbrushes. Received some for Christmas and will start using them when I’ve used up my plastic ones.Going forward, I’m planning on trying to make more of my own beauty products, buying soaps without packaging and in the spring or summer, I may try my hand at composting. ................
