UNFINISHED MISSION Here's a simple test to find out whether your mission on earth is finished: If you're alive, it isn't.--Anonymous

FAZtor 's Notes

By Fr. Arnold Zamora

A child asked her mother one morning, "When I asked dad where humans came from, he said we came from apes. When I asked you, you said we came from Adam and Eve. Who's telling the truth?" The mother replied, "Dad was talking about his side of the family. I was talking about my side of the family." Some relatives of mine came to visit me last weekend before they flew back to the Philippines. On the way to my car, after dropping them off at the airport, I saw a black bag in the middle of the parking lot of the airport's garage. I thought the bag had fallen off the car that had just left. I tried to wave my hands to catch the driver's attention, but either the driver did not see me or the bag I was pointing at was not theirs. After I picked up the bag so motorists could drive through, I wasn't sure what to do. Should I just leave it by the side hoping the owner would come back for it? What if it ended up in the wrong hands? Should I turn it over to airport security? I did not know where to take it. The owner may have a hard time finding it also. So, I decided to open the bag hoping to get some information. Of course, the thought that there could be a bomb inside did cross my mind. But I had to stop thinking about the worst and begin hoping for the best, because returning the bag was my priority. A clear plastic envelope was at the very top of the bag, containing three US passports. From the information I got, I could not tell if one of the passport holders was the mother of the other two child passports, but for sure they were relatives travelling together. Passports do not contain phone numbers to call. Happily, I found an emergency number for their Travel agency. The agent was able to locate the travelers who were already on their way home from the airport. We agreed to meet at the garage exit. The dad came, and he was very appreciative and grateful for what I did. He said: "I owe you a lot!" How much did he owe me? He never gave me anything. He did not know me either. He did not ask for my name, nor did I ask for his. How could he ever repay that something he owed? But the better question is not "how much" but "what" did he owe me? Yes, he owed me his deep gratitude but I was not expecting for anything. I was just doing an act of kindness, and kindness is given without expecting anything in return. And kindness is always an act of a relative of Jesus. We have lots of relatives in our own families. Jesus is our relative too and he comes to visit us everyday. If you are a relative of Jesus, then BE KIND! Perform an act of kindness today and everyday.

15th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Two by two

Mark 6: 7-13

Jesus put his arms around Peter and Andrew and guid-

ed them up to the road. The two brothers carried only long walking sticks as they headed out, empty-handed and full of fear.

Peter looked at Jesus with pleading in his eyes: "I'm just a fisherman, Lord..."

"And a good one, too!" Jesus reassured, "but you are also a fisher of men. You can do this as well. You have the power and authority. Believe me!"

Both of them knew they must go on this mission into the towns and villages of Galilee. Jesus was sending them with instructions to take nothing with them. They would soon discover God's strength in their weakness.

Pausing at the road, Andrew and Peter turned to face Jesus. "Remember this," Jesus said. "You have the authority over unclean spirits. Preach repentance." They had heard these words of repentance which John the Baptist had preached. During the previous months they had learned from Jesus--by his preaching and by his example. Now, as the first disciples chosen by Jesus, they were the first being sent out alone.

"Jesus, we have nothing with us, no food, no coins, not even water to drink." Peter protested in a last, desperate appeal to reason.

Jesus answered with a patient smile. His eyes told Peter and Andrew that this was a test of their faith. If they truly believed that God would provide for them, then the first demons they must expel are their own demons of fear and doubt.

Jesus hugged them strongly, clapping their backs with his hands as if to pack down the fullest measure of his confidence in them.

Once Peter and Andrew had set out, the road that stretched before them was the familiar route that led south toward Tiberias. Beyond that were the villages.

They heard the noisy morning chatter of birds perched in the trees fronting the lake. Bright sunlight was dancing in the sky. It was a glorious morning and the sweetness of life was upon them. Peter jabbed his walking stick into the ground ahead and Andrew echoed a rhythmic double tap with his own stick. Peter got the joke and they both began to laugh.

>

If Peter and Andrew come to our house will we welcome them in? Will we give them food and water to drink, wash their tunics and give them a bed in which to sleep? Will we allow them to stay as long as they want?

Or have we already sent them away, causing them to shake our dust from their feet? Somehow these questions challenge us to examine the depth of our faith and commitment to being a follower of Jesus Christ.

What is Evangelization? Pope Paul VI message "On Evangelization in the Modern

World" inspired and enhanced the Church activity in bringing the Good News of Jesus to all people. The essence of evangelization are the "proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ and the response of a person in faith, which are both works of the Spirit of God." (Go and Make Disciples, p.7)

As baptized Catholics we are called to be evangelizers to one another. In view of this our parish is forming "The Parish Evangelization Team" . The Team assists the parish in discovering ways to deepen the faith, share the faith and invite and encouraged others to the faith. They act as catalyst for evangelization to happen in our parish.

The Team is composed of 10-12 registered members of Holy Name of Jesus Parish with the following qualities: ? Comfortable with faith sharing ? Spirit of prayer ? Love the Church and has a good sense of the parish ? Mature in faith and compassionate heart ? Sensible ? Works well with people

It's time for us now to really see ourselves in front of God and share the gifts he has given us in building a more vibrant and faith-filled Church.

If Jesus is calling you to continue his mission of bringing the Good News to his people, please call the office at 415-664-8590 or email Sr. Necy at nguan@.

SENT BY GOD In Amos' time the vocation of prophet had achieved a very

formal status in Israel. The prophets had arisen, originally, to act as God's voice when Israel was no longer led by the spiritual/civil figures known as "judges," but by monarchs. Over time, the monarchy had appropriated the offices of priest and prophet, established them into companies, and reserved the right to appoint courtly prophets. Then, as now, when those in power also got to choose who would act as their official conscience, things sometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up prophets from unlikely places, and this is how Amos received his vocation as prophet. In last week's Gospel we heard how Jesus was raised up as God's anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. As we continue to discern our own vocation as baptized disciples, we can be assured that we are, in Paul's words, "chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will" (Ephesians 1:11).
