During Your Hospital Stay

What to Expect

During Your Hospital Stay

at Seattle Children's Hospital

A note about this book:

This book was written for patients of different age groups and may contain information that does not apply to your child's hospital experience.

This book is most effective when parents/caregivers read it first and then choose the information that is best for their child. Some children can cope with a lot of information, and others become anxious when given too much information. You know your child best and will know what makes them most comfortable.

We encourage you to be as much a part of your child's hospital experience as possible. Caregivers are welcomed and encouraged to be at the bedside 24 hours each day.

If you have questions or would like to schedule a Child Life consult (includes medical play or a tour), email childlifeclinmgrref@. To learn more, see page 13.

You will need to stay overnight in the hospital. Many other kids come to the hospital who also need to stay overnight. You may have a lot of questions. Read on to learn what the hospital is like.

Do you know anyone who has been to the hospital before?

Some patients are scheduled to stay at the hospital, while other patients arrive unexpectedly. Here are some areas you might see when you arrive.

When you are in the hospital, you will wear an ID (identification) bracelet with your name and birthday on it. The people taking care of you will ask to look at your ID bracelet often during your stay. If you brought a stuffed animal with you, it can have a bracelet, too.

Count how many people ask to look at your ID bracelet.
