GOOGLE AGAIN THE MOST VALUABLE BRAND

TOP FIVE ARE ALL TECH & TELECOM BRANDS

Google is back on top as the “world’s most valuable brand,” as ranked in the 2016 BrandZ Top100 Most Valuable Global Brands ranking released by Millward Brown and WPP. To reclaim the #1 position, BrandZ calculated that Google’s brand value rose by 32% over the past year to $229 billion, while 2015 winner Apple dropped 8% to $228 billion. The report says Apple’s brand value was impacted by its battle with the FBI over access to a locked phone which had been used by a terrorist in California.

Microsoft remained at #3, increasing its brand value by 5% to $122 billion. And if you’ve noticed a trend—yes, all of the top five companies for global brand value are technology and telecommunications players. AT&T moved up two spots to #4 as its brand value increased by 20% to $107 billion; and Facebook entered the top 10 for the first time, jumping to #5 from #12 with its brand value increasing 44% to $103 billion.

Facebook wasn’t even the biggest gainer—that was Amazon, jumping 59% to $99 billion to move up from #14 to #7, just behind Visa, dropping one spot to #6 even though its brand value increased 10% to $101 billion. Rounding out the top 10 were Verizon, up 8% to $93 billion as #8; McDonald’s, up 9% to $87 billion to repeat at #9; and IBM, slipping 8% to $86 billion and dropping from #4 in 2015 to #10 this year.

"The brands that thrive, regardless of sector, are those that behave like challengers and adopt disruptor models and mindsets," said WPP executive David Roth. Disruption was the dominant trend, with brands changing the status quo with their offerings in a number of ways, often beyond the use of digital technologies. Amazon built its own logistics network using independent contractors, which enabled it to offer flexible and one-hour delivery options, and started producing its own content. Facebook began hosting publishers' original content to keep members active. Starbucks (up 49% to $44 billion, #21) moved into the ecommerce space with a “tap and go” app, and enhanced its cold drinks and savoury ranges and offered beer and wine to extend its relevance.

The BrandZ ranking staff noted that close to half (46) of the brands in the 2016 Top 100 entered the ranking after it was first launched in 2006; 54 have been there since the inaugural ranking. “This shows how a strong brand can sustain its value over time, but also illustrates the potential that exists for new brands to successfully shake up the status quo,” the report said.

SYNDIE SNIPPET

During the 2016 May Sweep, Disney|ABC says Live with Kelly tied with Dr. Phil as the #1 syndicated talk show in Women 25-54, despite its early time periods with lower overall TV usage levels. In addition, the syndicator says Live with Kelly nearly tied Dr. Phil as May’s #1 syndie talker in Households, with just one-tenth of a rating point between the two programs. Live out-delivered Ellen by 29% in Homes and 15% in Women 25-54. Live finished the May sweep as the 2nd most watched syndicated talker, behind only Dr. Phil and ahead of Ellen by 26%.

GROWTH IN MEDIA TIME IS SLOWING

There are only so many hours in a day, so it seems logical that people would at some point max-out on the time they spend with various media, even as media devices become more portable and convenient. Thanks to media multitasking, eMarketer projects that U.S. adults will squeeze an average of 12 hours, 5 minutes per day of media usage into their waking hours this year—nearly an hour more than the average in 2011. But the daily figure is now rising slowly and is expected to grow by just 3 minutes between 2016 and 2018.

While mobile devices enable people to consume media content anywhere at any time, the numbers suggest a saturation point is near—and that increased time spent with one medium will tend to come at the expense of time spent with another, says the Spring report on time spent with media.

Traditional TV, despite a downward trajectory from four hours, five minutes daily this year to three hours, 55 minutes in 2018, remains the single largest part of U.S. adults’ media day. eMarketer notes that TV time far exceeds time spent on any one component of the overall “digital” category. While digital video is on the upswing, the sum of mobile viewing and desktop/laptop viewing will be less than one-fourth the amount of time spent on “non-digital” TV this year, eMarketer predicts. It adds, though, that 14 of the 26 minutes per day spent with "other connected devices" in 2016 will go to digital video, as when a consumer uses a Roku device or a smart TV to access digital video content like a program on Netflix.

It is a sign of digital video’s strength that it is the one desktop/laptop element that will grow rather than shrink through most of the forecast period. Even after an expected retreat of a minute per day of time spent in 2018, desktop/laptop video time spent will still be above the 2012 figure, at 24 minutes vs. 20 minutes. Over the same period, mobile video will add a daily 25 minutes of usage, going from nine minutes to 34 minutes.

Even in a category as robust as digital video, though, growth has slowed and is expected to slow even more. Looking just at people who are users of digital video, eMarketer’s forecast shows time spent per day rising from one hour, one minute in 2012 to one hour, 39 minutes in 2016, with further (but slower) growth expected to yield a figure of one hour, 46 minutes in 2018.

TRUMP STILL WANTS FREE TV

Having won the Republican primary contests by sending a fraction of what the losing candidates spent on television and other advertising, Donald Trump isn’t committing to raising the $1 billion that political experts say he’ll need to run against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. "I just don’t think I need nearly as much money as other people need because I get so much publicity. I get so many invitations to be on television. I get so many interviews, if I want them," Trump told Bloomberg in an interview after Tuesday’s final primaries. That’s a retreat from last month, when he told NBC News he probably would need to raise $1 billion for the campaign.
