"Top Five List"

Director of Children & Youth Ministries Spiritual Life Groups

3&4 5

I'm not a big fan of David Letterman, but I do like his Top Ten Lists. So here's my "Top Five" List of Things I'm Thankful for at Northside UMC.

5) A Warm Welcome- You all wer e ver y kind and hospitable to my family as we arrived back in July. Thanks again for all the gift cards, food, notes, and words of encouragement. You all made us feel welcome! The love of Northside will travel with us as we go.

4) Your Sense of Professionalism- Thank you for all your tr uthful words and advice over the past year. You have helped me become a better pastor, and also have helped me to improve in my preaching. I am grateful to all who have mentored me. Also, I am thankful for all of the staff here at Northside. They are all great assets to this church!

12 3) The Beach Service- It was scar y that fir st day, but after that I loved

it. It was great to be out in God's creation and preach the Gospel. I

loved the opportunity to be outside the walls of the church and share the

Good News with those who may not have heard before! I pray you

would continue to use this service as an outreach to those in need of

spiritual guidance and direction.

2) Handling all of the Transitions- I know that it has been a difficult year for you all. Thank you for handling it all with so much maturity and grace. A special thank you goes to the Staff-Parish Relations Team and all of their hard work this year. It has been a tough decision to take a leave of absence, but something I needed to do. Many of you have shared stories with me about a similar situation in your lives. You all have been very supportive and encouraging. Continue to keep my family in your prayers as we seek to follow God's plan for our lives and live out the desires God has put in us.

1) Openness to New Things- Fr om Super Bowl Sunday to The Chur ch has Left the Building to The Community Connection Night--these have all gone great! Thanks for your willingness to step outside your comfort zone and try something new for God's Kingdom! I pray that this missional approach to ministry would continue as you seek to make disciples and move out beyond the four walls of the church.

I will no longer be your pastor after June 14, but we will all remain brothers and sisters in Christ. My prayer for us all at this time is from Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals: "May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you; may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm; may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you; may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors." May the blessing of God--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--be with you now and always.

Peace,

Pastor Matthew

From our ASSISTANT TO THE

Dear Sojourners, As we all know on Cape Cod Memorial Day marks the start of summer! We certainly deserve a beautiful summer after the very long winter we had! And from what I saw in the community over Memorial Day Weekend folks were busy getting the summer started. I saw families getting together outside in their yards, cars parked all around a home as everyone gathered inside, and I saw cars packed to the hilt as they headed towards the bridge for a three day vacation. People were headed to the beaches for cookouts and barbeques, picnics with friends and picking up all those important last minute important gardening items at the local nurseries. It seemed everywhere you went there were cars and people galore! Anyway, I hope that you'll take advantage of the summer and the mood of this season. For those who attend church regularly and are looking to make an impact on their unchurched friends and neighbors, it's a great time to invite them over for a cookout and begin building a relationship so that in the days ahead, you can share Jesus with them. Invite them to a community dinner at the church- it's free and we have incredible food. Or have them over for a movie night- it's a great way to start a conversation and begin to build a friendly relationship. It's also a great time to be in service to a neighbor as they head out on vacation, to cut their grass or to keep an eye on their homes as they are away. There are multiple ways to show the love of Christ to others throughout the summer season, so be sure and pray for God to show you those opportunities and ask Him to bless your efforts with transformed lives. I pray that your summer will also be a time for a family vacation, whether you get away or you stay home, and reconnecting with friends and neighbors. Gathering the family together is essential to maintain strong families and to create a legacy for your children and grandchildren. Your children remember summer vacations no matter how elaborate or how simple because it's a time that they have the attention of their parents all to themselves. This summer why not take the time to pass along to your children and your grandchildren your faith in Christ and your commitment to Him by spending time with them away from the busyness of life. Remember our beach services will start soon and what a great way to start a Sunday with your family! I look forward to each Sunday during the summer, and especially June because on the first Sunday of the month we will celebrate our children for Children's Sunday. I look forward to seeing all of you because we have a special service planned that you will not want to miss out on. May your summer months be filled with warmth, joy, barbeques, friendships, bon fires, sunshine, cut grass, blooming flowers, and Christ's love! Peace, Kate

In and Around

God Sightings are Revealed When planning the menu for our most recent Community Meal, I thought about how cornbread would go well with the pulled pork. I was completely out of cornmeal that I purchased from Dexter Grist Mill in Sandwich (my favorite place to get cornmeal), and knew that the booth in Sandwich wouldn't be open until late May. I wrote a brief request in the Write to Know column in the Cape Cod Times and received ten phone calls the Sunday that it was published, offering cornmeal from Dexter Grist Mill. After talking with all who called, I traveled to all corners of the Cape over a period of 3 days to pick up this special cornmeal which had been kept in freezers. I met a sweet woman in Falmouth who had been a volunteer at the ticket booth at Dexter and is now in her early 90's. I traveled to Chatham and a lovely woman handed me her 2 bags and asked what else she could do. I visited a woman in Hyannis who had a neighbor who worked in the mill at one time, bringing her a bag of fresh cornmeal every week. My last stop was in Brewster, where a man gave me 2 bags from his freezer, and wanted to know all about Northside and how we were going to use the cornmeal. It was exciting to share how we have started our community meals, as well as our ministry serving a meal at Champ Homes in Hyannis each month. I am very thankful for these generous individuals who took the time to answer my request and shared what they had so that we could have fresh cornbread with our meal. Thanks be to God for the gift of community, and for Kate LaCroix for having this vision and desire to serve our community, both here at Northside and beyond the walls of the church. Our next meal is on Tuesday, June 16. All are welcome! Jan Urquhart

Crossroads- will break for the summer! Join us again in September!

What is Taiz? prayer? Taiz? prayer is a quiet simple way of prayer designed for people of all Christian traditions. These meditative candle lit services include simple chants sung repeatedly; rich silence; and prayers of praise and intercession. History of Taiz?:

These prayer services emerged from an ecumenical community of monks in Taiz?, France. Brother Roger, Taize's founder, arrived in the village of Taiz?, France in 1940. In the midst of World War II, he dreamed of creating a community where reconciliation was a daily reality. He began by giving shelter to refugees of the war, especially the Jewish community. Brother Roger recognized that the search for reconciliation was within each individual as well as within the community. Initially, the Taiz? founder lived alone, until brothers from various Protestant and Roman Catholic backgrounds followed. Today, as an ecumenical monastic community, Taiz? is a sign of reconciliation. People from around the world, especially young people, come to Taiz? looking for meaning in their lives as they prepare for responsibilities in their own communities. The brothers seek to awaken spirituality, particularly in young adults, and promote Christian unity and peace. The community's style of worship, including the mixing of meditative prayer and song, periods of silence, and the use of light have influenced services in many Christian churches.

Invitation to Join us: Wednesday, June 17th, 2015 at 7pm at Northside United Methodist Church in the sanctuar y for a time together of prayer, worship, singing, and silence. This service is incredibly moving and powerful and we invite

all people of all ages to join us. Questions, please contact Kate LaCroix.

Outreach Committee:

As we jump into the summer months Northside will continue to focus on "Feeding Hearts, Minds, Souls, and Stomachs!" Ther e ar e many ways in which ever yone can par ticipate in outr each oppor tunities and we hope you will join us in making a difference and changing lives! Various events and up-coming dates that are happening will be on the new bulletin board! In June we will continue our Healing Hunger ministry and will prepare, provide and serve a meal at Champ Homes. This month we will ser ve on Monday June 15th, instead of the last Monday of the month. Through this ministry we have an opportunity to meet and touch the lives of 30 to 40 individuals in our community in Hyannis by bringing them a warm meal. Additionally, we will continue with our "Red Wagon" ministry on the second Sunday of the month (June 14th). On the second Sunday of the month as the children go to the front for the Children's Message the Red Wagon will walk up the aisles collecting donated canned goods or nonperishable items for the food pantry from all of you. So instead of placing your donation in the brown box in the hallway by the offices before the service, hold on to your items and when the Children's Message happens in the service, hand your items to the passing wagon. Our goal is to fill the Red Wagon every month! These items will be added to the brown box and be brought to the local food pantry at the end of the month. Thank You!!!

Alongside these opportunities is the Changing the World Loose Change Outreach Project. June's focus is Katelynn's Closet. By br inging your loose change and putting it in the collection plates on Sunday mornings you are making a difference and showing that you care about those in need in our community!

This program has an enormous impact on the Cape and there are many ways to get involved besides donating loose change. If you are interested in learning more please visit: or call 508-367-2587.

Lastly, don't forget to purchase DY-ECH Cards befor e you go shopping at Stop and Shop, Shaws or Dunkin' Donuts! All cards are sold after the service in the fellowship hall. A portion of the sales is donated to preventing homelessness on Cape Cod.

DYECH Food Certificates Available on all Sundays

Continuing with our exciting mission of "feeding" we invite everyone to a Community Connection Night on Tuesday, June 16th, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. We will provide a free dinner at Northside and have a movie playing in the library for the kids so that after they are done they can enjoy a movie while we have fellowship. This is open to everyone in the church and in the community! Our hope is that everyone can feel fed by our church in multiple ways and a free will offering will be accepted. We look forward to having you join us in sharing God's love with our community!

Our focus this month at the Yarmouth Food Pantry is paper goods. So Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, and Tissues are of great need right now. If you ar e able to pr ovide any of these items the panty would be grateful as they are in short supply of these items right now. If you are interested in participating in this ministry please bring your donated items on Red Wagon Sunday or anytime to church and place the items in the brown box by the church offices. Thank you for making a difference!

Who Are Those Helping Hands?

For those new to Northside UMC, Helping Hands is a

committed group of 7 men who form the ministry dedicated to

helping the members and friends of Northside, as well as their

friends outside the church, who are in need of assistance or

advice to stay in their homes. We minister specifically but not

exclusively to single women, single mothers, elderly and those

in financial need. We also reach out to aid those who find that

local

contractors

will

not

respond to their needs for whatever

reason. Our abilities are almost endless in

responding to home upkeep. We

average about 70 homes a year and have

done just about everything imaginable in

home care, large or small.

The Church has Left the Building

On May 17th 2015 The Church left the building and went out into the communi-

ty to work. We had groups work on yard clean-up for the Brewster Housing Authority, small odd jobs, beach clean-up at Grey's Beach in Yarmouth, clean-up at Johnny Kelley Park in Dennis, letter writing to shut-ins and the military, making goodie bags for the local fire and police departments of Brewster, Dennis and Yarmouth. The kids joined Evy and Kate in preparing the community dinner that being held that week. A good time was had by all.

Thank you to all that Volunteered it was appreciated by all that we came in contact with.

Congratulations to Gary and Julia Higgins Stobbard on the birth of their daughter Lilia.

Lilia was born on May 15th in Cape Cod to first time parents Julie, a waitress, and Gary, a local fireman. What should have been the best day of their life quickly turned into the scariest day of

their life. Within a few hours of her birth they noticed she was turning blue.

Lilia was not receiving enough oxygen and was rushed to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. A series of tests, including a CAT scan, revealed that Lilia had had a stroke. The left side of her brain has a mass of blood, is enlarged, and she is experiencing seizures. She is currently taking antibiotics to reduce the number of sei-

zures.

Her mother, Julie, released herself from Cape Cod hospital within hours of Lilia's birth in order to be with her daughter. Once at Tufts, she experienced severe swelling of the feet and legs, extremely high blood pressure, and irregular heart beat. She was checked into the ER and immediately taken to the maternity ward.

She has recovered but this has contributed to their medical bills.

Lilia is expected to remain in ICU for over a month at this point. Lilia's seizures are lessening but there is no way to know what the damage is, or what developmental issues will arise as a result.

Both parents are taking time off to care for their daughter during this extremely difficult time, which is both emotionally and financially draining. Boston is two hours away from home and Gary and Julie are sleeping in the ICU with their daughter. They are extremely concerned for her well being. Luckily, Tuft's will monitor

her development and prescribe the best early intervention physical therapy at every stage.

This fund was started by family and friends in hopes to alleviate some of the financial pressure that mounting medical bills and time away from work create. Any assistance would be very appreciated.
