Your child will also need to listen in practice when the coach is giving clear cut directions and then they need to relay that back to you. Practices might not happen some days due to teachers’ meetings and teachers’ workshops, and practice might be called off at the last minute due to things out of our control. There will not be any practices after school on a day where there is a home game. On days when there is a road game, then there will be different instructions that are sent out to the teams. The team message codes are listed below:7th/8th Grade Girls Combined Basketball Team Code: Send a text to 81010---Text this message @srjhba7th Grade Boys Basketball Team Code:You're invited to join my group "Southridge Basketball 7th Boys" on GroupMe. Grade Boys Basketball Team Code:You're invited to join my group "Southridge Basketball 8th Boys" on GroupMe. basketball practices will be in the old gym (front of the school) because band is in the new gym each day due to social distancing guidelines. The first basketball practices will be held after school on Friday, October 2nd.?All 7th and 8th girls will practice together in the old gym from 2:25 to 3:45 and their ride needs to be there by 4:00. The 7th grade boys will be allowed to enter door 14 starting at 4:00 and their practice will be from 4:15 to 5:30 with rides being there by 5:45. The 8th grade boys will be allowed to enter door 14 starting at 5:30 and their practice will be from 5:45 to 7:00 PM with rides being there by 7:15. The 7th and 8th grade girls’ basketball players will need to go to the gym immediately after the 2:16 bell to start practice. All 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball players will need to leave campus immediately after school and will need to show back up at the correct time that is listed above. The boys’ teams cannot be on campus before 4:00 (7th boys) and 5:30 (8th boys) as there is no supervision and they will not be allowed in the building. Please work with us on staying within the time frame of the arrival and pickup times. If your child cannot consistently be picked up on time after each practice, then it could put them in jeopardy of not being allowed to participate in the program until this issue is corrected. All players will be picked up in the front parking lot by door 14 at the end of each practice. Players will never be allowed to roam the hallways of the building and you must always enter and exit through door 14.A physical on file and online Rankone paperwork must be completed before your child can practice. You need to email Jeremy Hayes at jeremyhayes@ a copy of the front and back of the physical signed by a doctor. If you need a copy of the physical to take to the doctor then you can go do a google search and type in ossaa physical and it will pop up. Football kids cannot practice until football season is over. But in order to keep it fair, the district has agreed for the football boys who are playing basketball once their season ends to have a few open gym dates with the coach where he can get to know the football kids and they will only be doing shooting and nothing else and that means no drills or no games. This is just a way for the coach to get to know half of his team before they arrive from football. These open gym dates will be for football players only and not for the rest of the team. These dates will be made available to the parents as soon as they are determined. We will be following the safety rules at practice. Your child will need a mask or Gaiter at every practice and game. It does not have to be worn during competition in practice or actual playing in a game, but it must be worn while standing around waiting on a drill to start or sitting on the bench waiting to go into the game. We will also have to stay separated as much as possible and this will be tough to navigate for the 7th boys (55 kids possibly), but we will make it work. The best thing to do on this deal is to have your child comply with the rules and then for you to give the coaching staff full support as we try to make this work. The decision on whether to use the old uniforms or the new uniforms will be made after we know for sure that we are out of danger of being sent home to virtual school due to rising Covid. We cannot run the risk of passing out thousands of dollars of new uniforms and then being sent home for virtual school and then I am not given permission to collect everything until possibly a few months later and by that time some of the uniforms will definitely be lost or damaged. We will do what is best for Southridge.Your child’s role on the team last year has no impact on what their status will be on the team for this upcoming season. Please explain to your child that it is a new season, and everyone is considered as being equal starting day one and it is their job to separate from the pack and to earn their role on a new team. Please talk with your child about our district handbook rules and especially about their social media accounts as any negative comment about our school or the team or about another player on the team could result in immediate dismissal from the team. Please talk with your child about the vaping issue that is sweeping the nation. It has been an issue in our basketball program over the last three years and your child could be given immediate dismissal from the team if they are involved in it.Please talk with your child about academics because they will not be playing if they do not have the grades. If your child is not trying to improve their grade, then they could possibly be dismissed from the program. We do not want to do this, but it is unfair for your child to take practice time from other kids especially if they will never get to play due to failing grades. Please talk with your child about maintaining good behavior while riding on the bus to games and while they are in the locker room. Any hazing or inappropriate behavior could result in immediate dismissal from the team. Please talk with your child about the importance of not losing their team issued uniforms and clothing. If they are one of the 14 kids who are selected for a particular game, then they will be getting team issued gear. If they are bypassed by another player, then they will have to turn in their gear because it will be given to someone else. If anything is lost or misplaced, then it will have to be paid for immediately. It is very frustrating for the coaches when a player loses a uniform or team issued clothing because we have never had a player lose a cell phone since our building opened because that social media app on their phone is the number one priority for too many of our players! If the phone is their main priority, then their basketball days might be numbered as they cannot play in the game without a uniform. We do not have any extra uniforms so if they lose it then they cannot play in the game until they have purchased a new uniform for our team. Technical fouls by a player while playing in the game will not be tolerated as it is not a good look for our school. If your child receives a technical foul, then they will come out of the game immediately. The coach is the only one that should ever be receiving a technical foul from the ref, and if that is the case then we will figure out why it happened. Please do not approach the coach after a practice or a game if you are upset about something. Instead, you need to comply with district policy and wait 24 hours to calm down before contacting me (Coach Hayes) to help you correct the issue.Practices over the holiday break are completely up to the coaching staff, but your child cannot be punished for missing these practices and our entire boys and girls staff understands the importance of balancing family time with scheduling basketball practice. Please keep the boys’ and girls’ basketball team drama away from Facebook. If you have an issue, then please contact me (Coach Hayes) instead of putting it out there for multiple people to comment about it as that does not help our school in any way. Please be respectful of the staff when talking to your child after a game. If you talk negative of the coach to your child, then how is your child supposed to show up at practice and respect that same coach? Please let the coaches do the coaching during the game. Boys Basketball Information: (Coach Hayes created this information)There is a lot of information below, but we want you to have the full picture from the very beginning as boys’ basketball probably has more parent complaints dealing with playing time than any other sport because only five kids can play at a time and the boys have the highest number of kids who join the team every year so every kid wants a piece of the pie and that is just not reality. It is our hope that by giving you very detailed information and also by creating a new boys basketball system that will upgrade the program, we have put ourselves in a position to have your full support throughout the season. All 7th grade boys and all 8th grade boys will participate in separate practices as one team from the very first practice until sometime around October 20th and the football kids should be arriving on October 21st. Since our first game is on November 5th, we are on a tight window and will be making decisions that benefit the entire program. We will only be suiting up 14 players all year long. On October 20th, some 7th grade boys and some 8th grade boys will be selected to possibly have some type of role in receiving a uniform for the first game. I said the word possibly because that will be changing after the football kids arrive the next day and get evaluated for a week. On October 28th, Coach Wallace will be letting the team know which boys including the football boys will be getting a uniform for the first game and who will be sharing a uniform and who will be going to join Coach Hayes in the Future Stars Program (See Below). The 7th and 8th boys in this initial evaluation process who are not chosen to possibly receive a uniform for the first game will be transitioning to the Future Stars Developmental Program which will be led by Coach Hayes. The boys in this newly created Future Stars Program will be moving to a morning practice twice a week from 6:00 to 7:10 before school in the old gym starting sometime after October 20th. The specific days each week for the Future Stars practices will rotate each week due to a variety of factors, but you will know at the end of each week what the plan is for the next week. The information for the Future Stars practices will be shared through the team message service and will also be posted on the Southridge basketball website. Everyone is getting an opportunity in our program and you will not find a uniform selection process in any other junior high program that is more organized than our plan.Once again, any Future Stars boy who shows great improvement will be moved immediately to the afternoon practice if that is what is best for the kid based on their current skill level. This does not mean that they will get a uniform or get to play, but it means that they are one step closer to achieving one of those things. The kids that stick around and who do not quit will gain opportunities every time another kid decides that he does not want to be a part of the program anymore. Since we are the only school using this basketball system, then it is our belief that we are setting ourselves up for an opportunity to tell an amazing story about a kid who started out at the bottom and moved to the top by never backing down from an amazing challenge of moving up the ladder on a team with a high number of kids. This system allows for that story to possibly happen. Recap: Our boys’ practices will be splitting from two separate practices and into three separate practices for the remainder of the season beginning sometime around October 20th. You will either be in the 7th boys current top 15 practice or the 8th boys current top 15 practice which take place after school, or you are a 7th or 8th boy who will be now be going to the Future Stars morning practice and practicing together. The practice dates for the Future Stars will be released at the end of each week for the next week. Please remember that no decision is permanent in our program, and that we must do what is best for kids and splitting into three practices is much better than 55 kids in a practice and 45 of them only participated for 15 minutes. We are doing this to give any kid who was possibly overlooked a chance to prove us wrong. (Recap: 14 total uniforms for each the 7th and 8th grade boys’ teams)-10 uniforms will go to 10 kids that will never lose their uniform unless they are bypassed or have a discipline issue. ----Final decision is made by Coach Wallace for this group of 10 uniforms!-3 uniforms will be shared by the next group of 5 boys and they will rotate each game so two of those boys out of that group of 5 can go with the team to the game and sit on the bench but they will not have a uniform for that game. If anyone in this group wants a permanent uniform, then they need to bypass someone who is in the top 10.-----Final decision is made by the entire coaching staff on which 5 kids will be chosen for this group of 3 uniforms!-1 uniform will go to the Future Stars Developmental Program and will be rotated each game between anyone who is not currently in the top 15 and the decision on who gets this specific uniform on the 7th boys’ and 8th boys’ team each game will be determined by Coach Hayes. If it is a close game, then only 8 or 9 kids might get playing time in the game as the coach is told to make decisions that put us in a position to win the game. Just because one of our boys received a uniform does not mean that they automatically get playing time in the game, so we might have five or six boys who will never play in a close game all year long as that is determined by the coaching staff. Some boys might not ever come out of the game due to their skill level, and this would be equal to our school quarterback and running back never coming out of the football game for the exact same reason. This system means that every kid in our program is accounted for and every kid knows that they can move up or down at any time. We will not allow kids to get so comfortable that they feel like they do not have to work hard and are entitled to continue to have a permanent uniform. If a kid does not want to work hard then they will be moving down the ladder immediately. Every member of our boys’ program will respect one another, and each boy will learn the names of every one of his teammates. The boys with a permanent uniform must always show respect to the boys with a rotating uniform along with the boys in the Future Stars Program or they might not have a permanent uniform for very long. “If someone is in your spot, then it is not your spot!” This is an original quote that was created many years ago by Coach Hayes. We cannot take steps forward as a program until every boy fully understands the they are replaceable at any time. We will demand from our players that they are coachable and will always give a maximum effort or they will not play. We will not make a promise to any kid that they will always be in the top 15 practice all year and that they will always have a uniform. They need to have confidence in their abilities while also understanding that they are constantly being evaluated and must always continue to perform with a maximum effort. We will be taking drastic steps toward winning the rebounding battle every game. If rebounding and playing defense are not two things that a player is interested in doing on a consistent basis, then that player will have a hard time scoring if they are never playing in the game because they are not interested in defense or rebounding. We are especially challenging some of our 8th graders to break their old habits and to commit to focusing on defense and rebounding more than offense because once they commit to doing this then we will start beating the good teams. We want your child to have a positive experience while improving their skills and hopefully they will consider playing basketball in high school. We want your child to have fun and to laugh and to really enjoy being a part of the program. We want to win, but we want to do it while creating wonderful memories with the boys while teaching them valuable lessons. We have spent hours putting this plan together and the only thing that we ask of you is to support us while understanding that we are doing something that is not happening at any of the other junior highs. Please contact Coach Wallace if your kid is currently in the top 15 and you are wondering what skills need improvement for them to move up the depth chart. Please contact Coach Hayes if your child is in the Future Stars Program and you have the same question. If you have a complaint or a concern or just need to vent, then please contact me (Coach Hayes) and we can work through it. Nobody on the coaching staff will be answering questions where you are comparing your child to another child, and we will not be discussing playing time or strategies.Girls Basketball Information from Coach Montgomery:Missing Practice Due to many issues with this situation last season, we’re adding a new rule into our program. If a player misses a day of practice, then that player must make up that practice. Make up practices will consist of running and shooting and shouldn’t take longer than 15-20 minutes to complete. It is the players job to get with one of the coaches to schedule a time to make up their practice that was missed. If a player misses a practice, then they must make up that practice before they can play in the following game. For example, if a player missed practice on a Tuesday, and we have a game on Thursday, then that player must make up that missing practice before the game on Thursday. If that player doesn’t get their missing practice made up or doesn’t communicate with the coaches about scheduling a time to make it up, then that player will not be allowed to suit up for the game. There are exceptions to missing a practice. If the student misses a practice due to reasons that would be considered excused for school, then that player will not have to make up that practice. Examples would be funerals, doctors’ appointments, court, etc. If that student misses for a doctor’s appointment, then that student needs to provide some form of a doctor’s note. If a player knows ahead of time that they will miss a practice(s), then it is the players responsibility to communicate with one of the coaches that they will not be at practice. This gives the coaches an idea of who will be at practice so they can get a practice plan together. We understand the Covid issue and that some of our players might miss due to policies out of their control, but please communicate with us so all players are accounted for every day. Extra notes from Jeremy Hayes (Athletic Facilitator)All girls’ basketball players will report to the old gym immediately after school if it is an away game and they will be with the coaching staff from that point on. No girls will be going home after school if it is an away game. The boys will be going home and will have arrival times given to them to report back to school so they can ride the bus to the game. The bus will not be waiting on any players as they must leave at a certain time each time there is an away game. Please email Jeremy Hayes if you need to drive your own child to an away game and we can get it worked out. All practices are in the old gym for everyone. All home games are in the new gym for everyone.New policy for all basketball players on home game nights:When playing a home game against a Moore school: 7th girls: stay with coach at school until game time (3:45)8th girls: leave after school and return at 4:15 (game at 4:45)7th boys: leave after school and return at 5:00 (game at 5:45)8th boys: leave after school and return at 6:00 (game at 6:45)The 8th girls, 7th boys, and 8th boys can start showing up earlier than their arrival time if they are honestly coming to support the teams and to watch the games. They will not be allowed to hang out in the concession area and must be watching the games. They will only get once chance on this deal and then they will not be allowed to do this anymore. When playing a home game against a Norman school:7th girls: leave after school and return at 4:00 (game at 4:30) 8th girls: leave after school and return at 4:45 (game at 5:30)7th boys: leave after school and return at 5:45 (game at 6:30)8th boys: leave after school and return at 6:45 (game at 7:30)Please contact Jeremy Hayes if you have any questions or concerns about this policy as we place a major emphasis on supervision and we cannot have kids on campus at any time without a coach being there as well. Our schedule will not be finalized until the end of the month. I have copy and pasted below a tentative schedule for the season, but this could change at any time.
