MICROSOFT WORD: The Basics
When Word loads you are immediately ready to start writing a new file.
Start a new line Enter
Insert Page Break ALT + I, B, ENTER
Undo last action CTRL + Z
File Menu
The file menu lets you accomplish all the basic important commands to a whole document such as saving and printing.
Open the File menu ALT + F
Then use the arrow keys and enter to select, or:
Open a document O
Save the document S
Save document under a different name A
Print document P
Exit Microsoft Word X
Font Styles
Font styles are an easy way of formatting your document to allow sighted people to distinguish between headers, body text, quotes, citations and so on.
Set Heading Level 1 CTRL + ALT + 1
Set Heading Level 2 CTRL + ALT + 2
Set Heading Level 3 CTRL + ALT + 3
Set Normal Style CTRL + SHIFT + N
Move to Style List CTRL + SHIFT + S
Get current font information INSERT + F
Formatting Text
Although I would recommend using styles to format text, you can also use the following commands to specify formatting on-the-fly. You either select text and then apply the command or toggle these commands on and off before and after a string of text, e.g.:
This isn’t bold [CTRL + B] This is bold [CTRL + B] This isn’t bold
Bold CTRL + B
Italic CTRL + I
Underline CTRL + U
Align Left CTRL + L
Align Centre CTRL + E
Align Right CTRL + R
Set point size CTRL + SHIFT + P
Change the font CTRL + SHIFT + F
Start List CTRL + SHIFT + L
To end a list press Enter twice
Navigating Text
Move cursor to start of line Home
Move cursor to end of line End
Move cursor to start of document CTRL + Home
Move cursor to end of document CTRL + End
Move to the top of the next page CTRL + Page Down
Move to the top of the previous page CTRL + Page Up
Move cursor to a text string within the document CTRL + F
List headings (cursor moves to heading when selected) INSERT + F6
Get current cursor position in centimetres ALT + DELETE
Count Words ALT + T, W
Reading Keys
The reading keys also move the cursor to the start of the word, sentence or paragraph that has just been read.
Read current word CTRL + NumPad 5
Read next word CTRL + Right Arrow
Read previous word CTRL + Left Arrow
Holding down SHIFT also selects the words as you pass them
Read current sentence ALT + NumPad 5
Read next sentence ALT + Down Arrow
Read previous sentence ALT + Up Arrow
Read current paragraph CTRL + NumPad 5
Read next paragraph CTRL + Down Arrow
Read previous paragraph CTRL + Up Arrow
Holding down SHIFT also selects the paragraphs as you pass them
Checking Spelling
Method 1
List spelling errors (cursor moves to error when selected) ALT + SHIFT + L
Read error and suggestion INSERT + F7
Method 2
Jump from error to error pulling up list of suggestions ALT + F7
Read Suggestions, ignore or add to custom dictionary Up/Down Arrow Keys
