Strategies for Success Life Skills ProgramDate: January 2019Strategies for Success (SFS) is a powerful, interactive, six-module life and soft skills program designed to help individuals succeed personally and professionally. SFS focuses on an individual’s development, understanding of their behaviors and attitudes, relationships with others and work environment and personal life. Each of the six modules consists of 20 hours of instruction and self-study. Individuals may attend modules most relevant to their needs or complete all six modules, resulting in a certificate of completion for the course. While priority attendance is granted to WorkFirst participants (individuals receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families – TANF), all WorkSource customers are welcome to attend on a space available basis. Following is a snap shot of what participants can expect to learn in each module:Module 1: Work Concepts I – Every good plan needs a great road map – develop yours here! Develop a roadmap to success while discussing self-motivation, exploring careers and learning what employers really want. Learn how to prepare and apply for jobs, package yourself like a professional and share your storyUnderstand what employers mean when they say customer service, workplace diversity, team building and professionalism Module 2: Health and Well-Being – What is ‘work-life’ balance? How do I take care of me while taking care of everyone else? Come learn with us!Examine your inner-professional, core values, life choices and personal integrityLearn how to be personally and professionally self-aware, establish boundaries and develop better stress and time management skillsEvaluate your social readiness and online footprintLearn to access community resources and expand networking skillsImprove your ability to solve problems, set goals and develop new action planning techniquesModule 3: Communication – Communication is a skill that never stops growing! Come learn how to improve your skills and odds of landing that next job! Learn about interpersonal and business communication and discover your own style Develop better listening, writing, computer and presentation skills Find out about verbal & non-verbal cues, practice conflict resolution and get tips on emotional control Get tips on how to present yourself the right way on the phone, in email and on social media Module 4: Personal Strength Builders – What makes you shine? Explore the skills it takes for work-place success (and grow the ones you already have)! Learn how to improve your attitude, find motivation, overcome fears, plan for success, improve your situation and create great time management skillsExplore how to project self-worth, integrity, flexibility and adaptability Get hold of your finances by forming good spending habits, getting rid of bad behaviors and becoming financially literate Module 5: Community Engagement – Why are we such social creatures? We will show you how communities can lift each other up and how even the tiniest gestures can change the world! Discover what it means when people talk about an individual’s culture or self-identity, and what it means to be sensitive to it Learn about your personal and social rights, demonstrating citizenship and civic engagement Module 6: Work Concepts II – You found the perfect job; now let us talk about how to land and keep it!Learn about multitasking and staying motivated Explore your personal leadership and organization skillsLearn to evaluate trauma vs. drama and how to manage the unexpectedGain an understanding of cognitive bias and how it impacts every decision we makeDevelop a solid vision for a professional futureBackground:In 2015, DSHS awarded ESD a contract to deliver Strategies for Success (SFS) to Basic Food Employment & Training (BFET) participants as part of the Resource to Initiate Successful Employment (RISE) pilot in King, Pierce, Yakima and Spokane Counties. Due to positive feedback from individuals participating in RISE, DSHS approached ESD about expanding SFS to TANF/WorkFirst participants as well. The curriculum was enhanced and in January 2017, SFS was rolled out in 15 WorkSource offices around the state and by year end, was expanded to 31 locations statewide.Results/Customer Satisfaction:In 2017, at least one module was completed by 1,286 individuals. Word about the value of this course quickly spread and in 2018, interest soared with 2,211participants registering and completing at least one module. Of this total, 762 people successfully completed the entire series of modules, earning a Certificate of Completion for inclusion in their job search portfolios.Customer satisfaction with SFS ranks amongst the highest of all classes offered in the WorkSource system. At the conclusion of each module, participants have the opportunity to complete a survey regarding their experience. When asked if they would recommend this class to others, 99.1% of participants said “yes”, demonstrating overwhelming satisfaction with the quality of the program.Future Opportunities:Strategies for Success has tremendous potential for expansion. This life changing course has received rave reviews from hundreds of individuals with a broad spectrum of backgrounds, education and experience and addresses dozens of hiring and retention issues of concern to employers.
