Lesson One Learning Experiences:

All students will get a Frisbee.  The teacher will verbally and physically instruct students how to throw a Frisbee, including the step, extension of arm, and flick of the wrist.  All of the students will line up and throw all Frisbees across the gym at the same time, to save embarrassment if the skill is not learned immediately.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (1 of 10)

Grade:            5 - 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education - Ultimate Frisbee

Title of Lesson:           How to throw a Frisbee, how to catch a Frisbee

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn how to throw and catch a Frisbee

 Standard (s) Met:        NHES 1

Materials and Equipment:       Multiple Frisbees for the class

Introduction:   Demonstrate to students how to throw a Frisbee.  The teacher can tell the class to “observe as the Frisbee is thrown.  Watch the movement of the arms and legs.”  The teacher can then ask the students to reply back what they saw.

Teaching Content:       Give positive feedback for students observing movements, and correct students if a movement is not properly described.  The teacher may have to throw the Frisbee multiple times.

Activity:          The teacher will state the process of throwing a Frisbee, step-by-step, while also demonstrating the action to the students.  The teacher will line all of the students up on a line, and have the students all throw at the same time, into space.  This will defend against a student’s fear of not being good, and being embarrassed.  The teacher will recite the steps involved in the progression of the skill.  Students can use the teacher’s verbal cues to adjust the mechanics of the skill.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated by the teacher.  The teacher will look at how students could accomplish the skill early on in the instruction, and then again after complete instruction of the skill is finished.  This will demonstrate pre-post testing of the skill, with minimal fail-rate.  The teacher will look at the mechanical ability of the skill, and the outcome of

Lesson Two Learning Experiences:

Students will aim the Frisbee at a stationary target.  Students will use specific movements already learned to base aim on.  Vision, as well as the small steps involved in the sequence, will help determine the strength of aiming ability.  The teacher will be able to move about the class, and lend a hand in form of instruction or demonstration.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (2 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

 Title of Lesson:           Stationary Aiming

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn how to aim at a stationary target

 Standard (s) Met:        NPES 1, 2

Materials and Equipment:       Multiple Frisbees, Mats

Introduction:   Explain to the students about the vision included when aiming for a target.  Remind the students to follow through with the arm motion, and do not forget about previously discussed motions involved.

Teaching Content:       Students will use specific movements already learned to base their aim on.  Vision, as well as the small steps involved in the sequence, will help determine the strength of aiming ability.  The teacher will be able to move about the class, and lend a hand in form of instruction or demonstration.

Activity:          The teacher will set mats up in a vertical fashion, giving students a large, specific target to aim for.  Students will practice their already learned techniques of throwing a Frisbee, but this time, toward a specific target.  Students can keep track of the number of times they succeed in hitting the target out of ten throws, and start over.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated by the teacher.  The teacher will look at how students could accomplish the skill early on in the instruction, and then again after complete instruction of the skill is finished.  This will demonstrate pre-post testing of the skill, with minimal fail-rate.  The teacher will look at the mechanical ability of the skill, and the outcome of the skill.  The teacher can also use a self-evaluation tactic, and ask the students their score out of ten throws, on average.

Lesson Three Learning Experiences:

Students will aim at a moving target.  Students must anticipate where the target will be, and follow through with the sequence of skill-movement.  The same properties of the motor skills involved in throwing a Frisbee with accuracy are still in effect for the third lesson.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (3 of 10)

Grade:       5 - 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

Title of Lesson:           Aiming with Motion

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn how to hit a moving target

 Standard (s) Met:        NHES 2

 Materials and Equipment:       Frisbees, partners

Introduction:   The teacher will explain where to aim when a trying to hit a teammate on the run

Teaching Content:       Remind students to focus on the procedure of the motion involved in throwing a Frisbee.

Activity:          The teacher will explain to the students that the pass of the Frisbee must “lead” the teammate, and be in a position for the teammate to make a catch.  The students will be paired up.  The student without the Frisbee will work as the “wide receiver” and go out for a pass.  The wide receiver can make cuts, and then, the “Quarterback” will lead the receiver with the Frisbee.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated before and after the bulk of the instruction on lead passing.  The teacher will look to see if the basic principles of Frisbee throwing are still being followed.

Lesson Four Learning Experiences:

Students will move or run while hitting a moving target.  Students must use motor coordination in order to maintain aim on the anticipatory target.  The same properties of the motor skills involved in throwing a Frisbee with accuracy are still in effect for the fourth lesson.  The student must be stressed not to rush the process, but to take their time and get the process correct.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (4 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

 Title of Lesson:           Motion Connection

Objective of Lesson:   Students will practice hitting a moving target, while moving

 Standard (s) Met:        NHES 2

 Materials and Equipment:       Frisbees, partners

Introduction:   Teacher will demonstrate by running and throwing the Frisbee to a moving target.  The teacher will describe cues of the movement, and relating the skill to previously learned skills

Teaching Content:       Teacher will remind students to focus on basic movements of throwing the Frisbee, while also anticipating where the teammate will be

Activity:                     Students will move or run while hitting a moving target.  Students must use motor coordination in order to maintain aim on the anticipatory target.  The same properties of the motor skills involved in throwing a Frisbee with accuracy are still in effect for the fourth lesson.  The student must be stressed not to rush the process, but to take their time and get the process correct.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated before and after the skill is completely learned.  This is probably the hardest skill to learn within the game.  Students will need a lot of practice to get this skill down

Lesson Five Learning Experiences:

Students must aim for an unpredictable (moving/not moving) target, all while running or moving.  This will respect a game, or game situation.  The thrower must give the catcher, or receiver, the best opportunity possible to make a catch.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (5 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

 Title of Lesson:           Unpredictable Target

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn how to hit an unpredictable target

 Standard (s) Met:        NPES 1, 2, 5

Materials and Equipment:       Multiple Frisbees for the class, partners

Introduction:   Explain to the students that the idea behind the lesson is to prepare students for a “game situation” by making quick decisions based on spacing and movement of the target.

Teaching Content:       Students will aim for an unpredictable (moving/not moving) target, all while running or moving.  This will represent a game, or game situation.  The thrower must give the catcher or receiver the best opportunity to make a catch.  Based on the position of the target player, the thrower is going to anticipate where the target player will be.

Activity:          The teacher will pair students up, and give each pair a fair amount to work in.  The partners will take turns being the passer and receiver, and will run creative “routes” for the thrower to anticipate direction.  The idea is for the thrower and receiver to become “in sync” with each other, and anticipate each other’s movements or actions.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated by the teacher.  The teacher will look at how students could accomplish the skill early on in the instruction, and then again after complete instruction of the skill is finished.  The main idea, as stated earlier, is simply for the students to become in sync with each other’s movements.  Participation will basically be the main evaluation too for this particular activity.

Lesson Six Learning Experiences:

The students will learn the rules of Ultimate Frisbee.  Rules of Ultimate Frisbee include:

•         No intentional contact with opposing team with Frisbee

•         No more than 3 steps allowed, after Frisbee is caught

•         Once Frisbee is dropped, possession changes

•         Team can only score by throwing Frisbee into the goal and coming down with the pass

•         Goals are decided ahead of time, usually the length of the gymnasium, behind a standard line

•         After the team scores, the scoring team will “throw off” to the receiving team, much like football

•         Contact is only allowed in “basketball moderation”

•         Players can box out, much like in basketball, but cannot give direct, intentional contact to knock Frisbee out of hands of the player

After learning the rules, players can practice throwing and catching the Frisbee, just for refreshing purposes.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (6 of 10)

 Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

Title of Lesson:           Ultimate Frisbee Rules

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn the rules of Ultimate Frisbee

 Standard (s) Met:        NPES 1, 2, 4, 5

 Materials and Equipment:       Frisbees

Introduction:   Explain to students the closeness of Ultimate Frisbee to sports like football, basketball, and soccer.  If students at all like those sports, they will enjoy Ultimate Frisbee.

Teaching Content:       Students will learn the rules of Ultimate Frisbee.  The teacher can have students perform their daily fitness routines and then get into the rules.  If there is still time left, the teacher can have the students play catch with the Frisbee, or even play Ultimate Frisbee.

Activity:          Rules of Ultimate Frisbee include:

No intentional contact with opposing team with Frisbee

No more than 3 steps allowed, after Frisbee is caught

Once Frisbee is dropped, possession changes

Team can only score by throwing Frisbee into the goal and coming down with the pass

Goals are decided ahead of time, usually the length of the gymnasium, behind a standard line

After the team scores, the scoring team will “throw off” to the receiving team, much like football

Contact is only allowed in “basketball moderation”

Players can box out, much like in basketball, but cannot give direct, intentional contact to knock Frisbee out of the hands of the player

After learning the rules, players can practice throwing and catching the Frisbee, just for refreshing purposes

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated based on the strength of their understanding of the rules.  The teacher can simply quiz or ask students about the rules, in order to make sure that the students understand the rules.  For a more natural evaluation, the teacher can see students put these rules into action when they actually play the game, Ultimate Frisbee.

Lesson Seven Learning Experiences:

Students will focus on defending the player with, and without the Frisbee.  Much of the same philosophies involved in defense in basketball can be applied to Ultimate Frisbee.  The defender must stay between their man and the goal, but also defend the pass.  The defender can knock the Frisbee down, as long as it is in the air.  The defender is not allowed to knock the Frisbee out of the offensive player’s hands, when in possession.

  Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (7 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

 Title of Lesson:           Defense

Objective of Lesson:   Students will learn how to defend players with and without the Frisbee

 Standard (s) Met:        NHES 2

 Materials and Equipment:       Frisbees, partners

Introduction:   Scaffold the skill by asking students how to defend players in basketball

Teaching Content:       Always keep an eye on the offensive player, and think ahead where the ball may go

Activity:                     Students will focus on defending the player with, and without the Frisbee. Students will be asked to think about defensive skills in basketball when defending in Ultimate Frisbee. This will be applicable to many students, as basketball is more popular than Ultimate Frisbee.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on body placement and positioning.  Pre and Post evaluation can be done in order to show the improvement of the skill.  Students can also be evaluated on their anticipation of the offensive movement.

Lesson Eight Learning Experiences:

Students will put together all of what they have learned over the past several lessons.  Students will put their knowledge and skill into effect in a simple 2-on-2 game of Ultimate Frisbee.  The court will be adapted to the size of the games.  This is the beginning of understanding how to play Ultimate Frisbee in relation to spacing, and teammates.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (8 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

Title of Lesson:           2-on-2 Ultimate Frisbee

Objective of Lesson:   Students will become more familiar with game-situations by playing a two-on-two game of Ultimate Frisbee

 Standard (s) Met:        NPES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Materials and Equipment:       Multiple Frisbees for the class

Introduction:   Explain to students the different movements and communication involved in Ultimate Frisbee.  The teacher can also describe 2-on-2 Ultimate Frisbee as a “mini-game” of the full version of Ultimate Frisbee.

Teaching Content:       Students will put together all of what they have learned over the past several lessons.  Students will put their knowledge and skill into effect in a simple 2-on-2 game of Ultimate Frisbee.  The court will be adapted to the size of the games.  This is the beginning of understanding how to play Ultimate Frisbee in relation to spacing, and teammates.

Activity:          Students will participate in 2-on-2 Ultimate Frisbee.  This will prepare students for a future game of Ultimate Frisbee, while also improving a student’s physical fitness and activity.  The teacher can begin to add players to games, making it three on three, or four on four, if time permits.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated solely on effort, and willingness to participate.  The teacher will use observation to evaluate the students.  The teacher will focus on throwing, catching, route running, defense, and overall activity when looking for evaluation of the student.

Lesson Nine Learning Experiences:

Students will participate in live Ultimate Frisbee.  The teacher will review the rules with the class.  Cones will designate the goal areas.  Students will be split up into teams by the teacher, as even as possible.  Score will not need to be kept with younger students, but could be kept with more mature students.

 Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (9 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

Title of Lesson:           Ultimate Frisbee Full Activity (Lesson 9)

Objective of Lesson:   Students will participate in a full-class game of Ultimate Frisbee

 Standard (s) Met:        NHES 2

 Materials and Equipment:       Frisbees, space

Introduction:   The teacher will remind students of the rules involved in the game, discussed in a prior activity.

Teaching Content:       Always keep an eye on the offensive player, and think ahead where the ball may go.  Also, remember to pay attention to the mechanical movements involved in the throwing of a Frisbee.

Activity:                     Students will participate in live Ultimate Frisbee.  The teacher will review the rules with the class.  Cones will designate the goal areas.  Students will be split up into teams by the teacher, as even as possible.  Score will not need to be kept with younger students, but could be kept with more mature students.

Evaluation:                  Students will be evaluated on their teamwork and spatial positioning within the game.  Students must be involved in the game, or make an effort to be involved in the game.  On the other side, if a student is not involving other students in the game, the student will have a poor evaluation.

Lesson Ten Learning Experiences:

Students will be assessed based on key skills involved in Ultimate Frisbee.

•         Form while throwing the Frisbee in stationary spot

•         Throwing the Frisbee while moving

•         Frisbee throwing accuracy

•         Frisbee catching ability

•         Defensive ability (staying between man and goal; also defending pass)

•         Ability to follow rules

- After the assessment, students can play Ultimate Frisbee for the rest of the class time.

Unit Lesson Plan

Ultimate Frisbee (10 of 10)

Grade: 5 – 12

Title of Unit:   Physical Education

Title of Lesson:           Ultimate Frisbee Assessment

Objective of Lesson:   Students will be assessed in key areas regarding the Ultimate Frisbee Unit

 Standard (s) Met:        NPES 2, 4, 5

Materials and Equipment:       Multiple Frisbees for the class

Introduction:   The teacher will explain to the students that they will be assessed in key areas which have been covered multiple times throughout the unit.  The students should not have anything to worry about, as long as they put forth effort and have learned throughout the unit.

Teaching Content:       Students will be assessed based on key skills involved in Ultimate Frisbee.  These areas include:

•         Form while throwing the Frisbee in a stationary spot

•         Throwing the Frisbee while moving

•         Frisbee throwing accuracy

•         Frisbee throwing ability

•         Defensive ability (staying between man and goal; also defending the pass)

•         Ability to follow rules

Activity:          Students will be called over gradually throughout the class period.  Students will be asked to perform each of the key assessment areas five (5) times, and the teacher will make an observation assessment based on the performed skills.  When it comes to defensive ability, the player will simply just practice lateral movement on a partner.  For rule-following ability, the student will just have to list off four rules of Ultimate Frisbee.

Evaluation:      Students will be evaluated by the teacher.  The teacher will look at how students could accomplish the skill early on in the instruction, and then again after complete instruction of the skill is finished.  The teacher will also look at the amount of times the student successfully completed the skill in the evaluation process.  If a student normally does really well in class but just seems to be having an off day, the teacher will have the ability to override a grade based on the assessment session.  The students are also being assessed daily through teacher observation independently throughout the unit.

Development:

Teacher will walk around and extend knowledge to students based on the help needed by the students.

On-going Evaluation:

Once students are comfortable with the initial throwing, students can partner up and practice with each other, including catching.  The teacher can quickly explain an “alligator catch” to prepare students for catching, in an informal matter.  The students will be able to progress by this, based on the teacher’s observations.

Closing:

Talk to the students about the difficulties of throwing the Frisbee, as well as other skills involved.  After taking questions from students, and supplying answers, the teacher will help the students with troubles based on the skill.
