History: 16 Hour SE Exams prior to NCEES exams: IL, CA, WA, OR, HI, ID, and NV (for a short while) have had SE exams, starting with Title Restrictions and moving to Practice Restrictions or being originally a Practice Restriction. These exams have historically been accepted for comity /reciprocity for other 16 hour SE exams as long as the jurisdiction in which the exam was given verifies that it was a 16 hour, structural engineering specific exam. CA and IL had their own 16-hour exams, WA/OR/HI had a 16 hour joint exam. Many of these exams were in place in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. The first SE I/II was given in 1985 and replaced the IL state exam. In the mid-80s, some of the western states' individual or joint exams merged their 16 hour SE exams into the Western States Exam. The Western States Exam was given under that name from 1986 through 1997. It was initially given in CA, HI, OR and WA, later NV and ID joined in its use. Therefore 16 hour SE exams have been documented by the western states, Illinois, and occasionally a short period by other states, since the 1960s. Some states had 8 or 16 hour SE exams prior to this time as well.
