Course outline

Basic statistical methods: Basics of Quality, simple 7 QC tools, Review of probability and statistics, Modeling process quality, Inference about process quality. (textbook Chapters 3 and 4)

Statistical process control: Methods and philosophy of SPC; Control charts for variables:[pic], [pic], and [pic]; Performance of control charts: OC function, ARL; Control charts for attributes: p, c, and u. (textbook Chapters 5, 6, 7)

System capability analysis: Process capability analysis, Measurement capability analysis and gage R&R. (part of Chapter 8)

Acceptance sampling: single sampling plans (part of Chapter 15)

Design of experiments: Full factorial and fractional factorial experiments at two levels, Criteria of maximum resolution and minimum aberration. (optional book Chapters 4 and 5)

Six Sigma and robust parameter design: Introduction of Six Sigma, DMAIC process, and Taguchi’s robust parameter design (textbook Chapter 2 and optional book Chapter 11).

Grading: Grades will be given according to two exams and homework assignments:

Homework 25%

Exam I (Feb 26, 2013) 35%

Exam II (April 18, 2013, not cumulative) 35%

Six Sigma and robust parameter design (attendance check) 5%
