Timperley cleared to return

to Stockport Road

THERE was good news for Timperley this week when they were cleared to return to staging ECB Premier League cricket at their Stockport road ground for the first time since August 13 last season.

Major surface and drainage improvements have been carried out on the ground, leaving scars on an uneven surface which, until now, were considered unsuitable and potentially dangerous for players.

A further inspection by senior umpires Alistair Davies and John Lofthouse has now given the thumbs up for a return to action and official league approval has followed.

So Timperley will be able to try and revive flagging title aspirations – and return to profit behind the bar - when they host leaders Chester Boughton Hall next Saturday.

Timperley, who have been playing all their games away, including three visits to The King’s School, Chester, lost their latest outing by seven wickets as Alderley Edge revived their own title prospects. Currently sixth after a bright start in April and May, Timperley were all out for 118, (Richard Wilkinson 4-44) after which Alderley coasted home on 119-3, Calum Rowe 65 not out

Rain halts Nantwich v Chester

Chester faltered when rain prevented a finish to their key visit to fourth-placed Nantwich, who emerged with 13 – 8 draw points. This leaves CBH 15 points ahead at the top.

Nantwich scored 225, Ray Doyle 64, Ryan Brown 59, Jimmy Warrington coming up with a key 33 batting at 10 with the score poised on 157-8. Jack Williams took 5-55. Chester reached 177-7 in response from 53 overs when rain arrived, Will Owen 41, Ollie Griffiths 3-35.

Toft edged up to third place with a 62 runs victory at Didsbury after posting the day’s highest tally of 255. James Scott put together a splendid innings of 103 off 88 balls (14 fours and six fours) and with Andrew Jackson, 50, put on 130 for the sixth wicket. Liam Booth took 4-44 for Didsbury who were bowled out for 193 after tea, Simon Normanton 79. Man of the match Scott came up with a useful bowling spell of 3-30.

Cheadle were routed for 62 by Bramhall’s fine all-rounder Matt Higginbottom, who took 7-28 from 11 overs. Bramhall coasted to 64-4, Adam Wilde 34 not out, Henry Appleyard 4-31.

Hyde virtually put their relegation fears to bed with a six wickets win at Grappenhall, for whom similar troubles return. Grappers mustered just 94, Jason Whittaker 4-45 and Hyde knocked them off at 98-4, Ryan Waterhouse 39, Elliott Young 37 not out, Matt Titchard 3-34.

Bowdon are rooted to bottom spot by 31 points after losing their 12th game, by seven wickets at home to Neston. Bowdon totalled a decent 188, Pat Ashling 47, Dewi Jones 36, James Claxon 5-58, Ash Davis 3-46. After which the Wirral men coasted home at 192-3 from just 35 overs, Will Evans reaching an unbeaten 102 from 100 balls, aided by David Hurst 34 and Dom Smith 36.

Top two falter in Division One

A BAD day for the top two in the First Division, Oulton Park being trounced by107 runs at Marple, while Davenham lost by two wickets in a dramatic last ball finale at struggling Sale.

This situation allows Widnes, Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple to step up their challenges, all with decent chances of making it back into the Premiership with six games remaining.

Oulton Park’s third defeat was a clear-cut affair after Marple had totalled 200-6, Andrew Hall 82 and Mark Makin, 70 enjoying a 139 stand for the first wicket. Park were then dismissed for 93, Ben Gibbon 34, Patrick Morahan claiming 4-8 and Jack Grundy 3-16.

Second-placed Davenham lost by two wickets in a tense game at Sale. Davenham batted well to reach 203-7, Peter Gallichan 62, Ben Gough 61, Jeremy McFarlane 4-70. Sale needed an unbroken 50 partnership for the ninth wicket between Brooke Guest (65 not out) and Sam Battersby (20) to pull it off at 204-8 with one ball remaining. Alistair Barrowman scored 55 for Sale, while Ben Gough took 3-56 and Robin Taylor 3-52

Widnes moved to within eight points of Davenham with a convincing 79-run win at home to Oxton after scoring 200, thanks to Danny Naughton’s 101 (132 balls; 10 fours and two sixes). Pat Magan took 4-40. Oxton were bowled out for 121, Dane Williams 52, Ben Hewitt 5-37.

In fourth place are Macclesfield, four further points behind. They dismissed Upton for 116, Chris McArthur, 35, led by a fine bowling stint from veteran Rob Porter, whose analysis was 6.1-3-5-6. Tom Tudor, 48 and Peter Barron, 37, helped the Silkmen stroll to 117-2 post-tea.

Bollington faced losing at bottom club Weaverham when they were dismissed for a modest 144, Jack Ward 47, George McCormick 3-30, Josh Adamson 3-37. After losing 11 of their last 12 games since late June, Weaverham reached a promising 90-3, Jimmy Lewis 37, then collapsed to 117 all out against fine bowling by Tom Horsfield 5-14 and Barbadian Dario Seale 3-26.

Warrington look most likely to lose their current status alongside Weavberham, their 12th defeat being by 10 wickets at home to Urmston in a one-sided game. After Urmston had bowled their hosts out for 67, Ian Grindley 4-13, they replied with 68-0 in just 7.2 overs, Callum Turner 58 not out.

New boys Romiley top Division 2

NEW to the League this season, Romiley moved to the top of Division Two with a handsome nine wickets home victory over Christleton, leap-frogging Barrow, who dropped to second spot after losing their fourth successive game.

Romiley made short work of Christleton at Birchvale Drive, routing their visitors for 76, then replying with 72-1 in 23 overs.

Barrow lost by four wickets at Alvanley, who restored their own promotion prospects, bowling their visitors out for 145 (Iro De Silva 52). Chris Charles enjoyed the best bowling figures in the division with 6-27. Mike Rowlands, 57, top-scored in Alvanley’s response of 149-6.

Lindow stay third thanks to a four wickets win at Cheadle Hulme, whom they bowled out for 128, with Ben Tyler, Ryan O’Brien and Alex Matthews sharing nine of the wickets after Tyler had seen catches go down off his bowing from three successive deliveries. Adam Bull, 35 and O’Brien 34, both not out, kept Lindow’s response together to close on 133-6, after recovering from 79-6.

Tattenhall took another step to banish The Drop - they are now 22 points clear - with a striking four wickets victory over Brooklands at the Flacca. Bowling their visitors out for 190, Kevin Carroll 61, A. Styan 5-25, Stuart Sadler 4-56, Tatters replied with 191-6, thanks to a match-winning innings of 98 from Glen Coppack, although A.J Hart did his best for Brooklands with 5-64.

Bredbury’s fight against relegation stalled when they lost by six wickets at Mobberley after being bowled out for 110, top-scorer Chris Wood 29 being one of five lbws. There were three wickets apiece for Abdul Aqeel, Matt Mountney and Nick Butters. Will Berisford-Ince top scored with a neat 38 in Mobberley’s reply of 112-4, Chris Wood 4-26.

Stockport stay in the promotion reckoning after they mustered a 15 – 8 points draw in a high-scoring game against Northwich at Cale Green. Stockport posted 224-8 led by George Barber 71, with Glinoj Cherian claiming 4-60, Northwich closed at 210-9, led by a fine 116 from wicket-keeper Luke Tapsfield (137 balls, 19 fours) aided by 50 by Chandra Wathukarage, 50 in a second wicket partnership worth 116. Mike Eley took 4-59.

CHESHIRE WIN AT DEVIZES ……

Jack Williams takes 12-100

DESPITE beating Wiltshire by 74 runs in the Unicorns county championship at Devizes last week, Cheshire cannot now catch unbeaten Western division leaders Berkshire, who lead by 26 points, both with one game remaining.

Chester leg-spinner Jack Williams was the star of the match at Devizes, taking 12 wickets for 100 runs. Unfortunately, he will not be available for the final game against Oxfordshire as he about to start a career in accountancy.

Batting first, Cheshire totalled 197, thanks largely to Alderley Edge opener Calum Rowe contributing a fine 92. Wilts were bowled out 79 runs short at 118, Williams taking 7-47 and paceman Wayne White 2-31

Batting again, Cheshire posted 159 on an increasingly difficult pitch, Luke Robinson 35, Harry Killoran 32 to create a lead of 227. This proved too many for the home side who were bowled out for 164 by Williams, 5-53 and Jack White, 3-26.

O Cheshire’s last game is against mid-table Oxfordshire at Chester from Sunday – Tuesday, August 13 – 15 (11 a.m. daily, free parking).

Thanks to Cheshire Communications manager Jim Law for match information.

Umpire’s quiz: by Alistair Davies

QUESTION 15: There is only one umpire available for the match. That umpire miscounts the number of valid deliveries in the over. From the seventh delivery, he calls No ball, then realises that he has miscounted. What action should he take?

ANSWER: As the umpire has realised his mistake, over would be called. There would be no extra ball delivered for the No ball. Law 22.5 (b)

QUESTION 16: The front foot of a bowler, delivering right arm over, lands beyond the middle stump at that end. The ball is then delivered. What action should the umpire take?

Charlie Lamb on that Lord’s triumph

FOLLOWING last week’s Newsletter item recalling memories of Bramhall’s triumph in the National Club knock-out final against Bath at Lord’s in 2001 and the part played by Charlie Lamb bowling Ian Shrubsole – father of Women’s World Cup winner Anya – the man himself has e-mailed back from his Geelong home in Australia. Writes Charlie:

“Yes, great memories of those years ago. All is good down here; two thirds of the winter gone, one month to go; been very cold, we even had a frost one morning. I have a hernia op to go through in three weeks’ time, then it’s full steam ahead for my 30th senior cricket season, would you believe! My body is ruined and I’m in pain for four days afterwards, but still enjoy the beers.

Hope to see some of you Poms down in Melbourne and Sydney for Ashes Tests this winter. Hopefully England will turn up this time and get the win - otherwise my life will be hell!

PS. By the way it was Albert Hall who sneaked home with the Man of the Match award at Lord’s with his 50. It’s always been a batsman’s game you know, Mike”.
