Procedures Context: Word study takes place at least 2 days a week throughout the school year. Students explore 200 Greek & Latin stems (roots/affixes) with 4 example words per stem that are derived from the academic vocabulary (Tier 1 and 2 words CCSS) Students in my district have learned a sequence of Greek & Latin stems starting in 3rd grade, so I would not need to provide an initial discovery activity to motivate the learning of word origins (morphemes). Students would have already had a week's exposure to beginning Alice tutorials. ACTIVATOR (10 minutes) Connect to prior learning

1. In cooperative learning groups of four, ask 1s & 3s (diagonal assignments), ask students to listen for different kinds of languages that are part of modern English words.

2. In cooperative learning groups of four, ask 2s & 3s (diagonal assignments), to listen for word patterns or word parts that help unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words.

3. Play the Ted Ed Talk, "Where did English come from?" Whole Class (WC), projector screen 4. Ask 1 & 2s, 3 & 4s to tell each other what they learned as they listened. 5. Randomly ask students to report back, WC, what they learned from listening to the video and to their partner

I DO (10 minutes) TEACHER INPUT/MODEL 1. Show the Alice video, "Turba- Stem" World 2. Replay and answer questions about Alice methods used in the single scene

WE DO (30 to 40 minutes) GUIDED PRACTICE 1. Lead students into creating a similar Alice world based on the root "chrom". Create a storyboard first completing it together with a Document Camera, and then with a projected Alice World.

YOU DO (60 minutes, spread out over several days) INDEPENDENT PRACTICE 1. Students create their own Alice world based on their assigned G & L word stem. Ask all students to complete a storyboard, raise their hands for a teacher check & initial, before they access their devices.

ASSESSMENT 1. Students export MP4 files to teacher through Google Classroom, teacher uploads to class Google Site through linked Padlet that houses year-long word web creations in a variety of mediums.

2. Teacher plays student's MP4 files for WC, and students use files as yearlong study aid. 3. Use rubric for formative assessment and score. Students should use the online teacher feedback in their next creation of an

Alice World to demonstrate understanding of another word web.

Accommodations & Modifications 1. Word webs with only 1 or 2 related words instead of 4 2. Small group assistance with co-teacher

Turba- Stem Quiz Creation 1. Show model of Turba- Stem Quiz. 2. Provide students copies of Alice Tutorial "A Simple Quiz," focusing on Steps 1, 2, 3, and 5, 6 3.
