Halloween Science-Finding Cause and Effect!FrankenwormsCut some gummy worms into extra skinny worms by cutting them the long way with kitchen shears. ?If it’s too tricky, ask an adult to help with this part. Cut each worm lengthwise at least four times. The skinnier, the better!Mix a few Tablespoons of baking soda into a cup or so of water, stir, and put your skinny gummy worms in the cup of baking soda solution. ?Let them soak for 15 or 20 minutes.Fill a clear glass or jar up with vinegar. (Be careful not to splash any in your eyes.) ?When the 15 minutes are up, pull your worms out of the baking soda solution with a fork, and drop them into the glass of vinegar. What happens?Your worms should start to float and move as the vinegar (acetic acid) reacts with the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to form carbon dioxide gas bubbles on the worms. ?They look like they’re alive and will wriggle until the chemical reaction stops!Vanishing Marbles (or eyeballs!)It looks like an ordinary glass of water... crystal clear water. But hiding just below the surface of the water are an amazing collection of large, jelly-like marbles that become invisible when submerged in water. The Jelly Marbles become invisible due to an identical index of refraction with the water. In other words, they vanish like magic! As you'll see, there's more to this experiment than meets the eye.Flying Tea Bag GhostsDemonstrate Convection with this tea bag ghosts! Cut the top of a tea bag. Tazo bags seem to work best. Dump out the tea and make some eyes and a mouth on the bag. Light the bag and watch it fly!Flying Ghost RocketsMaterials List:? HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" Film canisters?(we ordered the ones made for kids to use in Science activities- 12 for only $6) HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" Corn starchWaterAlka SeltzerBegin by drawing ghost faces on your film canisters. ? Once dry add a bit of corn starch to each film canister and then fill roughly 1/3 of the way with water. ?Then stir well. ?We mixed ours as we went, and refilled each rocket several times. ?The corn starch and water mixture is essentially homemade sidewalk paint without the added color. ?It washes right off the pavement so no worries. Then it is time to PLAY!You will want to set off one ghost rocket at a time. ?Take a piece of Alka Seltzer and break it into pieces. ?Then quickly drop it in the canister, put the lid on, flip the rocket over, set it down, and stand backThe ghost rocket will go flying high into the air.Erie Halloween Sounds-Balloon ScreamerIn this science experiment we will explore sound, the laws of inertia, and centripetal force. In the process we will make some really cool sounds and create a balloon that screams! Your friends will love it and your family will hate it. Process for Balloon Screamer:1) Insert ?the 1/4 inch hex nut into the balloon.2) Blow up and inflate the balloon with hex nut inside.3) Tie off the balloon.4) Grab the balloon by the top and begin to swirl the balloon in a circular motion. The Science Behind Balloon ScreamerThe hex nut spins rapidly against the inside of the balloon due to centripetal force. It races around in circles because the centripetal force generates an inward pull on the hex nut against the inner wall of the balloon. The law of inertia keeps the hex nut rotating inside the balloon in a circular manner. Inertia says a body in motion (hex nut) will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force. If you stop spinning the balloon the force of gravity will eventually stop the hex nut from spinning in a circular motion. The cool sound your hearing in created when the six sides of the hex nut come in contact with the walls of the balloon very quickly over and over. This generates vibrations along the inner latex wall of the balloon. Try experimenting with other objects inside the balloon to see if you can create different kinds of sounds.Static Electricity Dancing Ghosts and BatsMake Halloween shapes out of the tissue paper and use static electricity to move the shapes around. Here’s what you need:balloontissue papermarkersscissorstapesweater or your hairTape the bottom of your ghost, bat, or other Halloween shapes to the table.- ................
