This includes refund requests due to course withdrawal, vacations, absences or illness.Important Program Details Enrollment Please use the grade-level your child will be entering in September when looking at courses to enroll in.This year’s summer program is only open to Tenafly residents.Only the student enrolled in the course should be in attendance.Class FormatEach class will be 45 minutes long with a 5-minute break between periods. Attendance will be taken each day. At least 20 minutes of each class will be live via Zoom or Google Meets. The other 25 minutes will be independent or group/partner work. The teacher will be available for the entire 45-minute class to address questions and comments in real time.It is recommended that students find a quiet space in their home that they use each day for class.If a student is disruptive they will be formally warned by the teacher. If that behavior continues the teacher will have the authority to remove that student from class for that day.All students going into grades 4 and below will need assistance from an adult in order to complete the activities for each day.ARTS & CRAFTSArchitecture Exploration – Ms. Alycin Slezak Period 2 – Grades 3-6 Architecture Exploration provides students an opportunity to explore some of the greatest works of architecture past and present. After learning about these works of art (the great pyramids, bridges from around the world, the Burj Khalifa, Great Wall of China etc. students will engage in several “steAm” related design projects. We will use ordinary objects to create, test, and build our own structures inspired by real architectural wonders. Students will also engage in some drawing, designing and blue-print making activities as well. Architecture Exploration will provide students an opportunity to work on their problem solving and fine motor skills. Art Extravaganza I – Ms. Alycin Slezak Period 3 – Grades 1-5 Period 1-Grades 1-5 Children will be introduced to different artists and their works. Each project will be based on an individual artist. The children will use the artist’s work to inspire artwork of their own. Matisse, Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, Picasso, and Magritte are just a few of the artists we will be studying. The projects will include painting, printmaking, pastels, chalk and more.Drawing I – Ms. Pat PachecoPeriod 3- Grades 4-7Young artists will experience a fun-filled class of art-making with a variety of drawing media. The class will provide lessons on drawing techniques through observational drawing as well as creative and imaginative drawing. No prior drawing experience is needed.Drawing II – Ms. Pat PachecoPeriod 1- Grades 5-9Young artists will experience a fun-filled class of art-making with a variety of drawing media. The class will provide lessons on drawing techniques for those who are a little more advanced.Painting I – Ms. Pat PachecoPeriod 2- Grades 5-9Learn and explore basic painting techniques and media. The class will provide lessons on painting with watercolor, tempera paint and acrylic paint. Young artists are encouraged to express their creativity freely. Come and use your new skills to create a masterpiece!Cardboard Mania-Ms. Carla UrbaezPeriod 1-Grades K-5Do you have a lot of cardboard around the house? Learn how to create new toys and games out of cardboard. This course will walk you through interactive projects that you can keep to enjoy with family and friends. Be on the lookout for tubes and boxes! We will use all kinds of different shapes and our imagination!Directed Drawing- Ms. Alexandra HuntPeriod 1-Grades K-3Do you want to draw snowmen and polar bears? How about the Cat in the Hat? Or a fox running in the woods? Learn how to draw animals, characters, objects and more! Directed Drawing provides step-by-step instructions to students to help them complete an entire picture. You will develop your drawing skills and use different media to complete the picture. You will be challenged to make different shapes and lines, creating wonderful pictures of your favorite characters, objects and animals.Watercolor I-Ms. Alexandra HuntPeriod 2- Grades 1-4Watercolor class is great for experienced artists and beginners. We will learn about brush strokes, different kinds of brushes and various paint techniques. We will look at other artists for inspiration and ideas. Students will experiment with color- mixing, blending and even splattering! Each lesson will start off with a drawing lesson. Next, students will use markers to outline their creations and then we are ready to paint! As the artists grow more comfortable with their skills, they will have the opportunity to combine all they have learned and make masterpieces independently!BRAINPOWER AND STRATEGYBreakout Edu: An escape (class)room – Ms. Jillian Lyons Period 1 – Grades 4-7Breakout EDU is an escape room online platform that brings engagement and excitement into our virtual classroom. All Breakout EDU games require players to use critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. Your mission, should you chose to accept it; exercise your brain power while having fun and becoming an escape room master! This course requires you to have computer access for each class, every day. Materials Fee: $50Chess I (for Beginners) - Mr. Anthony ZorovichPeriod 1 - Grades 2-5For students who have never played or have had little experience with the game. Students will learn the fundamentals, rules, basic tactics, and strategies. Chess tournaments will be held and prizes distributed. Chess II (Intermediate/Advanced) – Mr. Anthony ZorovichPeriod 2 – Grades 5-9Students will further their tactical knowledge of the game and will participate in challenging exercises and competitive play. This class is for students with knowledge of how the pieces move and of basic game technique. Familiarity with the chess clock and use of algebraic notations for recording moves is a helpful prerequisite. Chess tournaments will be held and prizes distributed.Transition to Middle School – Ms. Samara LoboscoPeriod 1 Grades 5 & 6 This class is ideal for students exiting 5th grade and entering 6th grade or coming to TMS for the first time. This class would be an introduction to TMS including teaching skills necessary to be successful in the transition from elementary to middle school. Some of these skills include organizational skills, study tips, understanding the building and schedule, and feeling prepared to start middle school!Strategy Through Gaming – Ms. Anne-Marie Tully-QuinePeriod 3 - Grades 4-6Game on! "Play is work and work is play"! Join me, as together, we try a new spin on many of your favorite games! Each week students will engage in activities that will help review level appropriate Spanish like dance, songs, crafts, and games. Grades 1-3 topics will include colors, family food, movement. We also learn about remarkable global citizens (including children) who have made a major impact on our world. The curriculum includes topics such as parts of a computer, internet safety, technological engineering and designing, computational thinking, coding conditionals, booleans, looping and much more! Each session will begin with a mini lesson where students will learn what computer coding is, what computer programmers do and how we use computers in our every day lives. Have fun learning about the Solar System, including the Sun, planets, moon, and comets. Read books about the planets, the moon landing, and the constellations. Make planet art projects, color the layers of the Earth, design a moon poster, and create your own Solar System book. Hands-on projects and activities will help you to become a Solar System expert!Materials Fee: $20.00Typing 101- Ann-Marie Tully-QuinePeriod 2- Grades 3-5Learn basic typing skills through fun games and activities. We will focus on how to type and increase finger dexterity and proficiency for keyboarding.??Learn this important skill in a relaxed setting and watch your fingers fly across the keyboard!G-Suite/Google Apps for Education- Ms. Danielle KatzPeriod 2- Grades 3-5Period 3- Grades 6-9Students would get a crash course in some of the most used applications on the g-suite including Google Drive, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Forms, and Google Sites. These are applications students will be expected to utilize for school work and projects throughout their academic career in Tenafly and beyond. This course will teach students the basics, as well as some cool tips and tricks for each of these applications.
