YOUTH 2007 WORKSHOP

WHAT TEENS NEED TO SUCCEED

Chart a positive and spiritually based course in life that makes for good decision making and strong positive relationships. This workshop teaches a spiritual formation process built around the familiar ‘Seven Habits’. Developing a personal faith mission statement and learning to manage personal and relational bank accounts are part of this workshop.

Review of the ‘7 Habits’ and parallel study of the Biblical principles they embody.

I will intentionally use ‘7 Habits’ language and examples.

1. Be proactive.

2. Begin with the end in mind.

3. Put first things first.

4. Think win-win.

5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

6. Synergize.

7. Sharpen the saw.

Signs of a Poor PBA: Cave in to peer pressure easily

Depression and inferiority

Overly concerned about what others think

Act arrogant to hide insecurities

Self-destructive:

drugs, pornography, vandalism, gangs

Easily jealous

Develop a healthy sense of self confidence / value – strengthening esteem.

• HABIT #1 - BE PROACTIVE

BIBLE: Jesus initiated and acted

The baptism of Jesus, Matthew 4:13-17

Jesus chooses four fisherman, Matthew 4:8-22

Jesus teaches in the Synagogue, Luke 4:16-22

BACKGROUND: Act or be acted upon.

• HABIT #2 – BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

BIBLE: Jesus was intentional and was heading somewhere.

Healed the man with demons, Luke 8:26-39

BACKGROUND: Out of the rut.

Assignment: Think of one relationship that is damaged.

Commit to rebuild it one deposit at a time.

We are called to be good stewards of the gift of relationships.

• HABIT #4 – THINK WIN-WIN

BIBLE: Jesus washes the disciples’ feet, Luke 13:1-17

Greater love has no one . . ., John 15:13

BACKGROUND: Avoid win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose

EXAMPLE(S): Story – The Prodigal Son, Luke 15:11-32

APPLICATION(S): the basketball duo / avoid competing & comparing

This will be hard. Win the private victory first.

• HABIT #5 – SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD

BIBLE: Golden Rule, Matthew 7:12

Healing the blind Bartimaeus, Mark 10:46-52

BACKGROUND: We all have an intense need to be heard and understood.

EXAMPLE(S): Reading – “Listen”, Youth Reaching Youth, page 18.

APPLICATION(S): We have two ears and one mouth. That’s a great ratio.

• HABIT #6 – SYNERGIZE

BIBLE: Jesus called disciples, Mark 2:13-19

Jesus heals a leper & sent him to the priest, Matthew 8:1-4

BACKGROUND: Working in tandem with others. Looking for the new alternative.

• HABIT #7 – SHARPEN THE SAW

BIBLE: Jesus went up the mountain to pray alone, Mark 6:45-46

Restoration of Peter, John 21:15-19

BACKGROUND: The process of continual personal renewal.

EXAMPLE(S): Man sawing for hours

APPLICATION(S): Commit yourself to being a lifelong learner.
