Protein Synthesis Stop Motion AssignmentYour task is to represent the process of protein synthesis by using clay, and other materials, taking pictures and making a stop motion animation of the process. You need to demonstrate both transcription and translation in their entirety, beginning with DNA and ended with a polypeptide chain (complete protein). You can use clay and other materials to represent the structures and processes involved in protein synthesis. You must label the parts and processes along the way. You can upload pictures to create a stop-animation video and use photo and movie editing software to label key steps and molecules throughout the process. If you do not have the knowledge or skills to do the labelling this way you can use paper labels typed out and put in your pictures you take to make the stop motion movie of protein synthesis. We will then upload and share videos in class and on your Weebly page as a new tab called Protein Synthesis animation. You will then view and peer evaluate another group’s project using the assigned project rubric. The video must be done by Thursday. Words that you must use and show throughout the animation Ribosomal subunits (large and small)DNA template strand Translation – for a title and the process you need to show Transcription – for a title and the process explained RNA Polymerase Endoplasmic Reticulum Nuclear pore Nucleus DNA Anti-codon Codon Amino acid Messenger RNA Transfer RNAPolypeptide Protein Materials and technology: Different coloured clay, paper, and felts. You could use straws or noodles or yarn for some parts of the cell. A digital camera, phone, ipad. I will have iPad available for those who need them. If you are bringing your own device then install iMotion app onto it. If you have an android phone then you will need to find a download that will upload your photos and create the animation for you. iMovie or Windows movie maker are useful to but are more labour intensive. Useful website for technical support Part A: the structures and processes involved are taught in class and reviewed and learned. Part B: Make a story board of the steps and pictures and get it initialed by myself or Mrs. Weiss Part C: The stop motion video – the completed stop motion must be ready for viewing on part way through class on ThursdayUsing the available materials (any extras you bring), construct your parts to use in your animation of protein synthesis. Take a minimum of 50 pictures of the different stages of the process. Make very small changes to transition from phase to phase. Label the stages and the important parts of the cell, organelles, DNA as you are taking your pictures. Upload into Stop-Motion software to create your Stop-Motion video. Marking criteria: see the attached rubric for detail of marking scale Are all steps of transcription and translation are included & labeled? 30 All steps are labeled & represented20Does the model resemble the cell during protein synthesis10The cell model accurately depicts the events in protein synthesis 40TOTAL mark = 100 + possible 10 WOW factor marks Group Members Names: __________________________________________________________________Planning Sheet Get it approved!! Teacher Initials: _______________You will need to plan what materials or clay colour you need to represent the cell parts and get your labels created so that when you are ready to take pictures, you can focus on just taking pictures rather than getting things together. Also draw a picture of what each stage looks like, remember you need some transition pictures also. Phase of Protein Synthesis Important steps to highlight Materials/clay colours and labels neededPicture of image/parts/labeled Transition shot Transition shot Transcription 1 Transcription 2 Transcription 3 Translation 1 Starting parts Translation 2 Initiation Translation 3 Elongation Translation 4 Elongation Translation 5 Termination Translation 6 After a stop codon is reach – what happens to all structures involved.
