Editor-in-Cheif

The fR00T is published by four people you've probably never heard of, and who have, in fact, quite possibly never met in person.

The rate at which issues are published is frankly a mystery, but there seems to be some negative correlation with big sales on Steam.

Editor's Note:

Get out a comfy sweater and your ducky boots and get ready for fall.

This issue's beautiful cover art was created by Cassandra Yao (S6). Otto was so taken by the colour scheme that he demanded the entire issue turn pink. This month's issue also features two new puzzle setters: the team of Yanike & the Quiche Shrank and Ran authored a linguistics challenge, and Daniel Yang clued a crossnumber. Grid Logic

Author: Sunbeam

Back in the old days, before social distancing and Netflix, when Boomers were still mostly okay, there existed a mythical entity called BlockBurster. A cornerstone of twentieth century home entertainment, this establishment housed hundreds ? if not tens of hundreds ? of movies on individual storage media, paralyzing millions of families with indecision while profiting massively off of their stubborn inability to return things on time. Four UTS students had been vacationing in the mid-nineties for the past week; having had their fill of grunge music and 16-bit graphics, each visted the local BlockBurster on a different day, Monday to Thursday, to rent a movie, and each returned their film on a different day, from Thursday to Sunday. However, Brent the BlockBurster clerk was still sleepy from his recent Sergio Leone marathon and forgot to record who rented what when, and whether they were returned on time! Help the beleagured Brent keep his job and discover who borrowed what film when, and when they each returned it.

Cate Jennifer Leo William Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

1. Exactly one person has the same first initial for their name as the movie they rented.

2. Cate returned her tape after three days.

3. William and the person who rented Jaws ran into each other at the Blockburster.

4. Leo rented his movie the day before Jennifer rented hers, but neither of them returned the tape on Sunday.

5. Jurassic Park was returned on Thursday or Saturday.

6. La Belle Verte was returned after 4 days.

7. Willlliam didn't rent La Belle Verte (his French is terrible), didn't rent a movie on Monday, and didn't return one on Saturday

8. Wall Street was either rented on Tuesday or by William; however, it was not returned on Friday.

9. Jaws was rented the day after Jurassic Park.

10. Jennifer didn't return her selection on Thursday.

Otorf Numerals

Author: Yanike & the Quiche Shrank And Ran

Otorf is an endangered language with a total of 21 speakers from Otto von Frobeniussen's hometown of Otorf in Northern Norway. Our editor is on a grand quest to save his native language with the help of his trusty Otorf dictionary! As you might recall, he recently lost this treasured tome, but it was recovered with some help from our readers. After that fiasco, Otto decided that hiding his dictionary in an easily forgotten location may not be the greatest idea, and so he placed it in a brand new safe. Dr. Frobeniussen has the password combination on a post-it note, but he wrote it in Otorf; without the dictionary to help him, he's unable to translate the written numbers into the numbers he needs to dial in the combination. He's left us a few hastily scribbled equations to help you learn Otorf numerals, along with his code written in Otorf. All the numbers in the equations are less than 100 (although this isn't necessarily true about the code). Help Otto translate the safe's combination! Note: In this puzzle, ? is the letter eth, which is pronounced like the "th" in "the", and ? is ash, which represents a vowel between a and e. The ^ character represents exponentiation, the * character represents multiplication, and the / character represents division. Here are the equations he has given you:

frun ?ul = fran frul * frup

frup = ?up/frup

fral^frup = fran

fran m?l/?ap = ?al ?up

fran ?ul m?p * frap = fran ?ul m?p

frul frup + frul frup = ?ul ?up

fral ?ap * frup = ?al

?ul + (frup * fral) = (frup + ?up) * fral

Here's his safe combination for you to translate:

fran m?l ?up, ?an fral, fran frul,

fran frul, ?an fral frup, frun frap, ?an fral frap,

fran m?l m?p, ?an fral, fran ?al frup

After that debacle, Otto also figured that it might be best to create a new safe combination, but he needs that new combination written in Otorf so that he doesn't forget it (this plan sounds familiar... never mind). Translate his new combination into Otorf:

35, 49, 80, 117, 122, 108, 77, 97, 103

Use the letters in the hex grid to find words with five or more letters. The letter in the center must be used at least once, and all the other letters may be used zero or more times each. Score yourself 1 point for a 5-letter word, 2 points for a 6-letter word, and n points for an n+4-letter word. 5 bonus points for a word that uses all the letters (there's at least one). 30 points is okay; 40 is good; 50 is even better. Otto got 60.
