Tellis Smith Advances to the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships

At the Missouri State High School Track and Field Championships held May 29th in Jefferson City, Sumner student, Tellis Smith’s Gold Medal performances led him to record a set of the fastest individual electronic times in the history of Missouri Class 3A competition with recorded times of 21.57 seconds in the 200 meters and a time of 47.75 seconds in the 400 meters.

His performance times have qualified him to compete at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, the week of June 20-23rd, for a place on the National Junior Olympic Team. The Sumner Bulldog Family is extremely proud of Tellis as well as his first year Track Coach David Shanks.

Muminovic Earns Merle K. & Milton I. Goldstein Scholarship

Please congratulate Melisa Muminovic, a graduating senior from Soldan International Studies High School. Muminovic was named recipient of the Merle K. & Milton I. Goldstein Scholarship during the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Jewish Community Relations Council. . Presenting the award was the Goldstein’s son, Joel Goldstein. Muminovic, born in Gorazde, Bosnia, plans to attend the University of Missouri, St. Louis and to obtain a degree in Pharmaceutical Studies.  She is presently employed at Walgreens and has obtained her state license to be a pharmacy technician.

Merle K. & Milton I. Goldstein Scholarship was created to support education in the community. Both Merle and Milton Goldstein were graduates from Soldan High School.

Sargent Competes Internship

Darion Sargent, a senior from Clyde C. Miller, completed a successful multi-media internship at 99BillionBetter Inc.  His multi-media experience helped the school create monthly calendars and newsletters. In addition, he created a website for 99Billion Better Inc. and digital storyboards. For his work with the company, Sargent received a $100.00 stipend which will be used towards a college of his choice as he pursues a career in multi-media.

Meramec Celebrates 100 Years

Meramec Elementary School proudly celebrated its 100th Anniversary on June 5th by breaking ground on the school’s new garden affectionately known as the “Centennial Garden”.

A free Community Health Fair, sponsored by Senator Joseph Keaveny, will be held July 10th, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Forest Park Community College, 5600 Oakland Ave., St. Louis.

Resources and Opportunities for Students, Families and/or Staff

Are You Ready to Step Up to Leadership?

For those individuals that are interested in making a difference in their community, HDC is pleased to offer its Community Action Leadership Development Institute beginning June 28th at Bevo-Long Community Education Full Service School.

This program is designed to provide leadership training for income-eligible, community-minded people.  It is offered free of charge to anyone who is also willing to commit to attending all 12 sessions.  Sessions are held from 6:00-8:00pm, and designed to help participants:

• Understand board responsibilities, parliamentary procedures, how to run a committee meeting, and public speaking tips;

• Understand themselves and others and how to build strong relationships; and

• Learn in a safe and fun environment

Leadership participants who graduate will receive a Certificate of Completion and be recommended to the BoardLinkStL and partner agencies for candidacy to serve on various community service organization boards and committees.  Graduates are also eligible to be considered for a mini-grant award to coordinate a community-development project within their neighborhoods.

The St. Louis Public School District has concluded another successful year, and as each student prepares for a fun and enjoyable summer, please know that the St. Louis Public School District’s Community Education Full Service School sites WILL BE open and hosting a variety of programs and activities for SLPS students, their families, and any interested members of the community.

• Bevo-Long Community Education Full Service School, 5208 Morganford Rd., will be open June 1 through July 30. Services and courses offered include: summer afterschool programming, martial arts, music, sports, dental care, GED training, ESOL language support, gardening, and more. • Clay Community Education Full Service School, 3820 N. 14th St., will be open June 14 through July 23. Community organizations offering services include: Gateway Housing (dancing, singing, and drama), Hype Park Outreach (programs incorporating fine arts, theater arts, physical education, and fieldtrips concentrating on science and social studies), Hope is Moving In (homeless prevention), and Rainbow Counseling (family, youth and adult counseling). • Ford Community Education Full Service School, 1383 Clara Ave., will be open June 14 through August 1. Courses offered include: Organized sports and youth, adult and senior computer classes. Community organizations offering services include: Mission STL (adult and youth recreation and summer reading program), Mark Twain CRC (GED test preparation, health and wellness program, and St. Louis Crew), Operation W&S (Social Services gang abatement program & Camp DEFY), AIM HIGH (5th & 6th grade character development). • Hamilton Community Education Full Service School, 5819 Westminster Pl., will be open June 14 through July 29. Courses offered include: Step aerobics, basketball, summer afterschool programming, and a healthy choices program. Community organizations offering services include: University of Missouri-St. Louis (graduate course in education administration), and Washington University (Each One Teach One afterschool support). • Lyon@Blow Community Education Full Service School, 516 Loughborough Ave., will be open June 14 through July 30. Courses offered include: summer afterschool programming, basketball, chess, GED training, leadership development (provided by the YMCA), and employment training (provided by SLATE). • Mullanphy Community Education Full Service School, 4221 Shaw Ave., will be open June 1 through August 15. Courses offered include: tutoring, GED training, recreational sports, and mentoring. Providers include: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA Youth Leadership, 22nd Juvenile Court, and OASIS Tutoring. • Nottingham Community Education Full Service School, 4915 Donovan Ave., will be open May 10 through July 1. Courses offered include: martial arts, painting, T-ball, soccer, basketball, HDC, and notary services. • Shaw Community Education Full Service School, 5329 Columbia Ave., will be open June 14 through July 23. Courses offered include: yoga, bicycle safety, volleyball, basketball, hiking, and field trips. The Letter Carrier’s Band will also provide services for adults. • Sigel Community Education Full Service School, 2050 Allen Ave., will be open June 14 through August 2. Courses offered include: aerobics, Pilates, summer afterschool programming, tutoring, music, mentoring, and basketball. Providers include: Youth In Need (Childcare), Explore St. Louis (field trips), and Hope is Moving In (homeless prevention). • Stevens Community Education Full Service School, 1033 N. Whittier St., will be open June 14 through August 16. Courses offered include: basketball, soccer, fashion design, computer training, open gym, garden maintenance, and a reading/study group. • Vashon Community Education Full Service School, 3035 Cass Ave., will be open June 14 through August 1. Courses offered include: hat making, jewelry making, GED training, football, and a girls’ leadership program. Providers offering services include: Better Family Life (healthy relationship workshops), MERS/Goodwill (job readiness), and Venturing Crew (Boy Scout Leadership Camp). • Walbridge Community Education Full Service School, 5000 Davison Ave., will be open June 14 through July 23. Courses offered include: drum line, majorettes, and adult men’s basketball. Providers offering services include: STL CAN (recreation, aerobics, and academic enrichment), Impact (arts, crafts, and field trips), RWF Development Corporation (certified nursing instruction), and Health Institute (FUNtastic Nutrition and “CAN STEPS”). • Yeatman/Liddell Community Education Full Service School, 4265 Athlone Ave., will be open June 14 through August 1. Courses offered include: healthcare education, tutoring for 7th grade communication arts and mathematics, field trips, recreation, radio station programming, tutoring, and basketball. The City of St. Louis also offers several free or low-cost summer activities to residents.

Summer Camps

• The City of St. Louis Parks, Recreation & Forestry is offering Tennis (ages 7-15), Basketball (ages 8-17), Football (ages 8-17), Soccer (ages 7-15), and Track/Conditioning (ages 7-14). Camp sessions will be held June 14-August 6, and are offered at no cost to participants. To enroll, or for more information, please contact (314) 289-5367. • YMCA-Metro St. Louis is hosting Full Day and Summer School Extensions at Camp Derricotte for children ages 5-12. Sessions will be held June 7-July 30. Locations include Jackson Park School (7400 Balson), St. Frances Cabrini (3022 Oregon Ave.), and the West Florissant Center (4632 West Florissant).

• The Saint Louis Art Museum invites children, ages 7-12, to participate in the 2010 Summer Youth smART program, a free summer arts education program. Participants will learn to sketch works of art in the Museum’s collection, and then design and create a sculpture to take home. Sessions will be held June 29-July 30 at the St. Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts Dr. For more information, please call (314)655-5268.

Summer Public Pools

• The City of St. Louis Recreation Division is offering a variety of swim classes and open swim periods from June 14-August 15. For more information, please call (314) 289-5320. Locations include: Wohl Center (1525 N. Kingshighway), Gamble Center (2907 Gamble), Tandy Center (4206 W. Kennerly), Marquette Center (4025 Minnesota), Buder Center (2900 Hickory), 12th & Park Center (1410 S. Tucker), and the Cherokee Center (3200 S. Jefferson).

Summer Feeding Programs

• School’s Out Café, sponsored by the Division of Youth & Family Services, is offering free breakfast and lunch for children (ages 0-18) at a variety of locations through the city beginning June 8 and continuing until August 13. For specific sites, or more information, please call (314) 657-1695.
