Accessing the Research Module

The Research Module can be accessed by clicking on the Research tab at the top of the Advisor Workstation. To access different universes, for example, the Canadian Mutual Funds universe, click on Canada Mutual Funds in the left hand navigation pane.

Find out how many funds are available in each Research Universe.

You can find the number of funds available in a universe or list at the bottom right corner of the screen. Here you will see the Displaying results.

Example: Displaying 1-25 of 7847. 1-25 represents the number of results per page, and 7847 represents the number of funds available in the universe.

Rank funds based on data in a column. Example: Rank funds by one-year return.

Fund lists can be sorted based on any data point in the Morningstar database. Click on any column header to rank the list of funds in ascending order. Clicking again will rank the list in descending order.

Create a customized view from more than 300 data categories to analyze funds based on data that you find most important for your business.

Example: Show only MER, Fund Code, and Category information within the Mutual Funds universe

Custom Views can be created for each universe within the Research Module. These Custom Views allow you to create customized column lists.

To create a Custom View: 1. Select Research Custom Views from the left hand navigation pane under Research User Files.

At the top of the screen, click on the New Custom View button. The Custom View tool will appear. 2. Begin by giving the Custom View a name in the Custom View Name box. 3. From the Select Universe drop down, select the universe you would like the view to apply to. 4. In the Available box, you will see all of the available data points within the Morningstar database. Either double click on a data point, or use the arrow button to bring the data point over to the Selected box. 5. You can then use the up and down arrows to re-organize the list. From there, click Save.

After creation, Custom Views can be found by clicking on View within the applied to universe. To apply make your custom view the default, click on View...Set as Default View.

Highlight/Unhighlight fund(s).

To select one fund, click on the fund row, or use the check box to the left of the fund name. To select more than one fund, use the check boxes, or hold the CTRL key and select all of the

funds you would like to use. Holding SHIFT will allow you to select a group of consecutive funds in a list.

Reduce fund universe to show only highlighted funds.

To compare funds that you have selected from a universe, click View...View Only Selected. Your universe of funds will then be limited to only those that you selected.

Reduce fund universe to funds in a specific CIFSC category.

Example: Show only International equity funds

In each universe, you will see an option called Show Screener. Clicking on this option will update the left hand navigation pane with dynamic search criteria that will narrow your search results by Morningstar Category, Fund Family, Equity and Fixed Income, Morningstar Rating, and Sharpe Ratio.

To use the Screener to limit a fund universe to a specific Morningstar Category: 1. Click Show Screener 2. Select the CIFSC category(s) from the Morningstar Category drop down, and your list of

funds will update. 3. Click the Hide Screener button to hide the screener, and re-introduce the defaulted left hand

navigation pane.

Reduce fund universe to show only funds sponsored by a specific company.

Example: Fidelity

In each Research universe, you will see an option called Show Screener. Clicking on this option will update the left hand navigation pane with dynamic search criteria that will narrow your search results by Fund Family, Morningstar Category, Equity and Fixed Income, Morningstar Rating, and Sharpe Ratio.

To use the Screener to limit a fund universe to a specific Fund Family: 1. Click Show Screener 2. Click on the Fund Family drop down, and select the fund sponsor(s) using the check boxes

to the left of the fund family's name. The Research universe will automatically update to reflect your screeners preferences. 3. Click the Hide Screener button to hide the screener, and re-introduce the defaulted left hand navigation pane.

Create a saved list of your favorite funds.

If you come across funds that you would like to keep your eye on, create a custom Research List.

To do this: 1. Select funds from the grid, and then click New List. This will launch the list building tool,

where the funds you selected in the research module will populate in the Total Search Results box. 2. Add all or some of the funds using the Add and Add All buttons. 3. Once the funds have populated into the Items Selected for List box, click Save. 4. Give the new list a name and click OK.

Create an Advanced Search.

Advisor Workstation allows you to find investments matching fund characteristics you have defined. You can use any data point within the Research module as a criterion for your search.

To launch the Advanced Search tool: 1. Click on the Advanced Search button available within the Research Module above the

spreadsheet view. This will launch the Advanced Search tool. 2. Select the universe you would like to apply the search to, and then begin populating the

Relationship, Field Name, Operator and Value fields. 3. To save the search, click Save, to run the search without saving it, click OK.

Restore entire list of funds.

If you had narrowed down your list of funds using the Find tool, Advanced Search, or the Screener tool, and you would like to re-set your list back to the original universe, either: Click on the universe name (now in blue) located at the top of the screen, or Click on Reset Universe located at the bottom of the screen

Show fund codes and purchase information.

Fund codes can be quickly viewed within the spreadsheet view of any universe, and can be found as a data column in the Basics view.

Alternatively, if you would like further compensation information you can generate a Purchase Info report.

To generate a Purchase Info report: 1. Highlight the fund(s) of interest 2. Click on Reports...Purchase Info.

Create printable performance graphs.

1. Highlight the funds you wish to generate a graph for. 2. Click Tools...Graphs from the menu bar. This will launch the graphing tool. 3. At the top of the screen, there are different tabs representing the different graphs. 4. After customizing the graphs, you can generate a PDF printable report by clicking on

Generate Report, located in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

Display a one-page summary for a fund or group of funds.

Highlight the fund(s) of interest by clicking on the check boxes to the left of the fund. From here, click on Reports...Investment Detail Report to view a summary page which can be printed or saved.

Please note, if you select multiple funds, you will generate an Investment Detail Report for each selected fund. This is a big time-saver!

Create a tailored report bundle based on your client's investment knowledge and financial goals.

Use the Security Report Builder to create a report bundle for your client. 1. Select the funds you would like to use in the report, and then click Report...Security

Report Builder. This will launch the Security Report Builder tool. The Investments tab allows you to add additional investments into your illustration. 2. Once you have added all of the funds into the Investments Selected for Illustration box, click on the Report Options tab. 3. Here, you can enter the cover page information, as well as select all the reports you wish to include in the report by clicking on the check box beside the report now. 4. At the bottom of the Report Options tab, you can choose to offer the report in English or French. 5. Click on Generate Report to view a tailored PDF report based on your client's investment knowledge and financial goals.
