Professional Experience

BusWest, Carson, California

BusWest is a division of Los Angeles Truck Centers, LLC, a $500 million commercial vehicle dealer with facilities throughout Southern California and Las Vegas. Products include Freightliner, Daimler Chrysler, Sterling, and Hino commercial trucks, along with parts distribution, body shops and finance resources.

President

Created and branded a bus distribution division, leveraging the assets of LATC. Grew sales from under $500,000 in 2004 to $50 Million in 2007. With a focus on clean transportation, utilizing CNG, LPG and ULEV gas, provided a unique and profitable selling advantage in the California markets. During this growth period, negotiated distribution agreements with four vehicle manufacturers, including Thomas Built School Bus and Starcraft Commercial Bus. Expanded distribution through the acquisition of Sunset Bus and California Bus Sales and coordinated the merging of personnel, facilities and processes.

By providing key contacts with the FTA and CalTrans, won numerous state and federally funded contracts. BusWest is now considered the major distributor of school, shuttle and transit vehicles in the western United States.

Ebus, Inc., Downey, California

A venture capital funded, turn-around situation focused on the manufacture and development of electric and hybrid-electric buses, trolleys and shuttles. Capstone Microturbines, NiCad batteries and other state-of-the-art drive systems are featured in these alternative-fuel vehicles.

President

Responsible for marketing strategy, direct sales activity and day-to-day operations for the organization. During the first year of operation, grew the company from zero product sales to $5 million while growing the staff from 21 to 60 employees. Working closely with venture capital investors, implemented plans for continued growth and margin improvement.

Charger Bicycles, Monrovia, California

A division of AeroVironment, Inc, a 25-year-old, publicly traded (NASDAQ- AVAV), technology-company specializing in cutting-edge engineered solutions to the challenges of clean energy, fuel-efficient transportation, unmanned aerial vehicles and environmental issues. With over 150 professional engineers and staff, AV provides both products and services to NASA, General Motors and the Department of Energy. Notable innovations include the Gossamer Albatross, the General Motors SunRaycer, the solar powered Pathfinder airplane and the GM Impact electric car.

President

Established a joint venture between AeroVironment, Inc. and GT Bicycles, Inc. (NASDAQ-GTBX, now private) to develop, manufacture and distribute electric power assisted bicycles on a worldwide basis. Responsibilities include:

finding the right partner and brokering the strategic relationship

development of the overall business plan and corporate strategy

acquisition of capital investment and human resources

product development

management of a multi-discipline engineering team, integrating both internal

and outside technology resources

marketing strategy and product launch

reseller relationships

Report to Board of Members on a quarterly basis. Prepare financial briefs, board minutes and financial analyses. Interface with banking, legal, insurance and outside audit resources.

Charger achieved significant industry and media acclaim. Chosen as the Best New Recreational Product of 1997 by Popular Science Magazine and selected as an Editor’s Choice by Bicycling Magazine.

Director of Commercialization

Evaluated the many proprietary advanced technologies developed by AeroVironment and to create commercial businesses, licenses or products based on these technologies. Responsible for:

developing a process to create and evaluate new products

product and market assessments

feasibility plans and business plans

special products and projects

Via expeditionary marketing programs, launched several business units and drove the initial marketing strategy and activity. Coordinated the effort to commercialize technology acquired from the General Motors Research & Development Laboratory for use in 'non-automotive' markets. Created two new stand-alone business units: a Bioremediation company (AeroVironment Remediation Services Inc.) focusing on environmental technology acquired from General Motors and an electric assist bicycle company.

Star Software Systems, Inc., Torrance, California

A microcomputer application software publisher focusing on small business accounting and management solutions. Provided various private label software products for IBM, Tandy Corporation and AST Computers.

President

As co-founder of Star Software, responsibilities included product design and development, day-to-day corporate management, national account marketing, raising outside capital and strategic planning. Results included a 3400% growth in sales in the first five years of operation while twice earning positions on Inc. Magazine's list of the 500 Fastest Growing Privately Held Firms in America. Star Software sold and installed over 150,000 small business software systems and sold over 200,000 copies of various promotional software products. Private-label clients included Tandy, AST Computers, Epson America and IBM.

While at Star Software, coordinated a first stage venture capital investment by Control Data Corporation, a private secondary stock offering through broker dealers, a merger with Monogram Software and the eventual sale to Abacus Software of Toronto, Canada.

Bill is the co-author of two Business Planning software products; “Venture-The Entrepreneur’s Handbook” and “B-Tools”.
