Then there will be a whole class discussion on who owns the companies (shareholders) and how they came about being owners (purchasing shares on the Stock Market). Content- Lesson Activities (45 min.)Students will partner together and use the Internet (MSN Money and Yahoo Finance) to find publicly traded companies they would like to purchase stock in. They can take turns choosing companies until they have a list of four. Students will use the Motley Fool for Teens website to investigate purchasing stocks, commissions, and cost basis ().Introduce and discuss the formula for calculating cost basis. The cost basis of a stock purchase is what you pay for it (price per share multiplied by the number of shares, plus the commission you pay). Groups will use the company list they created earlier to calculate the cost basis for of each of their investements if they purchased 100 shares. The teacher will work with the groups that are having trouble understanding how to calculate the cost basis. Summarizing Strategy (30 min.)Students will create an Excel Spreadsheet with columns for publicly traded companies’ names, company ticker symbols, price per share, number of shares purchased, commission, and cost basis. The teacher will provide 6 stock ticker symbols. The students will have to lookup each stock fill in the rest of the columns based upon purchasing 100 shares of each company. Finally they will write a formula for finding the cost basis for each of the companies. This will be completed for homework.Assessment/Evaluation (Describe how and when learning will be assessed)Students Excel spreadsheets will be evaluated for completeness and accuracy of the formulas for cost basis. Adaptations for Learning Styles This lesson contains activities that provide for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles.Accommodations and Adaptations and for Special Needs StudentsSpecial Needs Students’ Excel spreadsheets can be pre-formatted with the formulas so that the cost basis is automatically calculated. They can also be paired up with students that are fluent in the needed computations.Career Street Connection:Company: Erie InsuranceCurriculum Connection: Supervisors in the Life Actuarial Department of Erie Insurance explained the importance of the students developing the following skills:Ability to use Microsoft Excel to make computationsStudents need to be able to work together in groups on projects. ................
