AgVenture Field Trip Plan

Goals

1. Make the field trip available to all 3rd grade students in San Joaquin County.

2. Increase the awareness of locally grown specialty crops produced in San Joaquin County and sold as Select San Joaquin.

3. Teach children about the importance of agriculture’s roll in history, economics and health.

4. Introduce children to healthy food choices.

5. Create an ongoing event that is a partnership between the agriculture industry, San Joaquin County and all the school districts in the county.

Objectives

1. Provide sponsorship and grant monies to fund the event at no cost to the school districts.

Tactics

1. Use the Catholic Charities grant to help with the health portion of the presentations. Inquire about money from Kaiser Permanente, HealthNet, San Joaquin General, Lodi Memorial, Sutter Tracy Community Hospital and Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

2. Obtain sponsorship from agriculture producers, packers, processor and service organizations. These sponsorships can be monetary and in-kind.

2. Conduct three agriculture field trips throughout the county.

Tactics

1. Lodi Grape Festival Grounds: Lodi Unified and Linden Unified School Districts, New Hope and Oak View Districts

2. Stockton Fair Grounds: Stockton Unified and Lincoln Unified School Districts and Holt Union District

3. A school farm facility to be determined: Tracy, Manteca, Ripon and Escalon Unified School Districts and Banta, Jefferson, Lammersville and New Jerusalem Districts

3. Insure that all of the displays and presenters demonstrate and show speciality commodities that are produced in San Joaquin County.

Tactics

1. Work with local farmers, packers, processors and service organizations to provide displays and presentations relating to local commodities.

2. Provide information for teachers to use in their classroom.

3. Host a one hour teacher workshop and provide classroom sets of information and curriculum.

4. Set guidelines for presentations.

Tactics

1. Create outlines for the soil/water, health, production and processing presentations.

2. Commodities for Lodi/Linden: cherries, apples, walnuts, pears, peaches, dairy, strawberries, grapes and asparagus.

3. Commodities for Stockton/Lincoln: cherries, apples walnuts, dairy, asparagus, tomatoes, strawberries and almonds.

4. Commodities for South County: almonds, watermelons, pumpkins, tomatoes, dairy, peaches, apricots and grapes

5. Have all children attend one presentation on healthy food choices.

Tactics

1. Work with Cooperative Extension, San Joaquin County Health Dept and 5-A-Day to develop materials for this presentation.

2. Provide useful curriculum for teachers to use in their classroom.

6. Facilitate the Health and Agriculture Field Trip through the San Joaquin Agricultural Foundation.

Tactics

1. Collect donations

2. Correspond with farmers, packers, processors and service organization.

3. Correspond with all school districts.

4. Work closely with the Agriculture commissions office, County Board of Supervisors, San Joaquin Farm Bureau and San Joaquin Office of Education
