Reduce your risk of the flu and colds. Wash your hands often for 20 seconds with soap and water.

Caring for Sick Kids

A healthy child gets sick when the child breathes in germs that an infected person has coughed, sneezed, or breathed into the air. Or, the child touches a surface contaminated with germs and then touches their mouth or nose.

Prevention

Cold and flu season runs from September through April. It's especially important during this time to focus on prevention:

Make sure all children and adults wash their hands often and well.

Teach children to cover coughs and sneezes and wipe their noses.

Get a flu shot. Everyone 6 months or older should get the flu vaccine every year.

Symptoms

Treating your child at home

Get the right diagnosis so you can correctly treat your child's illness. Know the symptoms of some of the most common infections.

Common cold

The common cold is caused by many types of viruses. Usual symptoms include sore throat, runny nose and watering eyes, sneezing, chills, and general aches. A cold typically lasts for 3-7 days.

Flu

Influenza (often called the flu) is a viral disease that can make people of any age ill. Influenza can cause fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, and muscle aches. Although most people are ill for only a few days, some people get seriously ill and need to go to the hospital. Fatigue from the flu can last for several weeks.

There are ways to help your child feel better, such as:

Have your child drink plenty of fluids Make sure they get plenty of rest Use a humidifier (an electronic device that puts

water into the air) If it helps, give your child an over-the-counter

cough and cold medicine. Never give aspirin to children or teens with cold or flu symptoms.

If You Want to Do This:

Choose Children's Medicine with This:

Unclog a stuffy nose Quiet a cough Loosen mucus Stop runny nose and sneezing Ease fever, headaches, minor aches

Nasal decongestant Cough suppressant Expectorant Antihistamine Pain Reliever (Analgesic)

Strep throat

Strep throat is caused by a bacteria and is more common in children than in adults. Strep throat can cause severe sore throat, fever, headache, and swollen glands.

Know when to call your doctor

Your child should see a doctor if they have strep throat. Colds and the flu can be treated at home, but you should call your doctor if you notice any of the following:

Symptoms get worse Symptoms last for a long time After feeling better, your child develops

signs of a more serious problem. Some of these signs are nausea, vomiting, high fever, shaking chills, chest pain, or coughing with thick, yellow-green mucus.

When giving your child over-the-counter medication, follow these tips from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:

Read and follow the label directions every time. Pay special attention to usage directions and warnings. If you notice any new symptoms or unexpected side effects in your child, or if the medicine doesn't appear to be working, talk to your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before giving two medicines at the same time to avoid a possible overdose or drug interaction.

Follow age and weight limit recommendations. If the label states not to give the medicine to children under a certain age or weight--don't. Call your doctor.
