For Personal or Family UseWorship for Sunday, April 5, 2020Lent 6 – Palm SundayAs you sit down this Sunday morning in your home and shift to an attitude of worship, give thanks to God for this day. The following resource may aid you in a personal worship or devotional time. If you are gathered with others, you may take turns reading or speaking prayers aloud. You may choose to sing the hymns out loud, hum them to yourself, or simply meditate on their words. Prayers use the plural “we” to remind you that there are fellow brothers and sisters praying and worshipping with the same prayers this morning.Opening Song: Tell Me the Stories of JesusTell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear;Things I would ask Him to tell me if He were here;Scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea,Stories of Jesus, tell them to me.First let me hear how the children stood round His knee,And I shall fancy His blessing resting on me;Words full of kindness, deeds full of grace,All in the love light of Jesus’ face.Into the city I’d follow the children’s band,Waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand; One of His heralds, yes, I would singLoudest hosannas, “Jesus is King!”Opening PrayerGod, open our hearts and our minds to hear you speaking to us in the stillness of this space. Give us courage and hope. Grant us the all-surpassing peace of your presence. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.Scripture 1: Mark 11:1-11As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,“Hosanna!”“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.Song: Hosanna, Loud HosannaHosanna, loud hosannathe little children sang;through pillared court and templethe lovely anthem rang.To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. From Olivet they followedmid an exultant crowd, the victory palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud. The Lord of earth and heavenrode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little childrenshould on his bidding wait."Hosanna in the highest!"That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King.O may we ever praise himwith heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presenceeternally rejoice.Scripture 2: Mark 14:3-9While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”Response: The True KingToday is Palm Sunday – the day we celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We read the passage that depicts throngs of people following Jesus as he makes his way into the city. Finally things are going to be different! Finally, the King has come! It is a day of celebration for sure. And Jesus is the King. And yet, what most of the people in the crowd probably did not realize or understand was that Jesus was a King who was coming to be crucified. Jesus was a King who was coming to suffer. Jesus was a King who would not return violence with violence and death with death. Jesus was (and is) a King unlike any other. When we proclaim Jesus as our King on Palm Sunday, let us consider who this King is. I invite you today to meditate upon the person of Jesus, especially as we enter into Holy Week, where we recount his suffering and death. What words or images stood out to you in the Scripture texts? What does it mean to you that Jesus is your King? How can you proclaim the kingship of Christ today?Apostles’ CreedI believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;*the third day he rose from the dead;he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.Prayers of the PeopleTake some time to prayer for the needs of your family, your neighbors, the community, the country, and the world. Trust that they are received by God through Jesus Christ. The Lord’s PrayerOur father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.Amen.OfferingPause for a few moments now to offer up yourself and your gifts to God. Please continue to send your tithe to the church as you are able so we may continue vital ministry even during this time of “social distancing.”Lord, we offer up to you our minds. We give you our thoughts, our words, and our study. We offer up to you our souls. We give you our prayers, our struggles, and our deepest questions. We offer up to you our bodies. We give you our hands, our feet, and our actions. We offer up to you our hearts. We give you our desires, our allegiance, and every fiber of our beings. We offer up to you our prayers and our presence. We give you our time, our participation, and our thanksgivings. We offer up to you our gifts. We give you our money, our resources, and our assets. We offer up to you our service and our witness. We give you our talents, our stories, and our willing service. Lord, we give back to you that which is already yours, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.Song: All Glory, Laud, and HonorAll glory, laud, and honorTo thee, Redeemer, King,To whom the lips of childrenMade sweet hosannas ring.Thou art the King of Israel,Thou David's royal Son,Who in the Lord's name comest,The King and Blessed One.The company of angelsAre praising thee on high,And mortal men and all thingsCreated make reply. The people of the HebrewsWith palms before thee went; Our praise and love and anthemsBefore thee we present. To thee, before thy passion,They sang their hymns of praise; To thee, now high exalted,Our melody we raise.Thou didst accept their praises;Accept the love we bring,Who in all good delightest,Thou good and gracious King.BlessingMay the peace of Christ rest upon us all, this day, and every day. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. ................
