Bullying – Teacher's Guide

Overview

Every day many students are bullied at school or in the playground. In this activity the students are going to read true stories and poems written by students from other countries about being bullied. They will be asked to react to these stories and poems as well as submit an on-line response.

Students can access all the Internet sites for the Interactive Activities by clicking on Students' Area in the ECB On-line homepage, then click on:

Procedure

Define bullying. What are the differences between verbal and physical bullying? Ask if anyone in class is willing to talk about an incident in which they were bullied and how the situation was resolved.

Go to . Click on Your Submissions and then choose Drawings, Poems and Stories. Choose one of these. These are authentic works by students. Read or show it to the class. Discuss with the students why they think this student was bullied. Discuss how they would resolve the situation. Read the replies written by other students. Do your students agree or disagree with these replies?

Tell the students to go to the same site and choose at least one drawing, poem or story. They should print the drawing, poem or story. Ask them to complete the Bullying activity worksheet based on the drawing, poem or story they choose.

Tell the students to add their own personal reply to the drawing, poem or story they chose.

If your students do not have access to the Internet, print several drawings, poems and stories for them to choose from.

Presentation

The students present a summary or read the story or poem to the class, including their personal reaction and suggestions on how they would resolve the problem.

The students write a story of poem describing a situation in which they or someone they know was bullied. They should include suggestions on how to resolve the situation.
