Once-ler symbolizes the attitude of big business towards the environment.

Lorax symbolizes Mother Nature’s response to abuse of the environment.

The Boy symbolizes Seuss’s solution to the problem created by Once-ler

Once-ler sees opportunity in the land of the Truffula and builds a business that takes advantage of the resources

He ignores the warnings of the Lorax even though he claims to care.

This reflects Seuss’s view:

“I the Once-ler felt sad/As I watched them all go,/But…/Business is buisiness…/And Business must grow.”

He ignores the damage he is doing until he destroys the last Truffula.

The result is Seuss’s warning to industry and lawmakers

Lorax literally “speaks for the trees” and the animals

Warns Once-ler of the damage his is doing just like Mother Nature warns us…(Give some supporting examples)

Eventually Lorax gives up and leaves after there is nothing left to salvage. He leaves only a mysterious message

This is Mother Nature’s plea for help and Seuss’s chance to present solution

The boy is curious and willing to pay the price for knowledge – represents the hope of the next generation.

He listens to the entire story showing just how much he cares to learn from the Once-ler’s story

Demonstrates that he is Seuss’s solution by accepting the challenge and by actually helping Once-ler solve the message in the stones.

Inspires Once-ler to offer what he can to help the boy fix the damage.

Seuss uses the Once-ler, Lorax, and Boy to illustrate his message that the earth is important and must be protected.

* Thematic Point: The story shows Seuss’s intent to influence young reader’s views on the environment

* The story is about more than the conflict between Once-ler and Lorax…Expand this point.

* Finally..Once-ler tosses the seed to the boy, the seed that represents the power of today’s children and Author’s

message: “Unless someone like you/Cares a whole awful lot,/Nothing is going to get better, It’s not.” Expand Point

* We Once-lers may even find that we can bring the Lorax back to places it has abandoned with the help of the children.

The story suggests that this is Seuss’s hope – It was clearly written to send a message to that exact audience.
