METHODOLOGY

The Glengariff Group, Inc. conducted a 1,000-sample statewide, random digit dial survey of Michigan residents for the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regularly Affairs, Health Care Information Unit. The survey has a margin of error of +/-3.1% with a confidence level of 95%. The survey was conducted on March 1-4, 2013. 80% of respondents were contacted via landline telephone. 20% of respondents were contacted via cell phone.

This survey reflects identical surveys conducted in March 2009 and March 2011. The left column provides aggregate responses from the March 2009 survey. The center column provides aggregate responses from the March 2011 survey. The right column represents aggregate responses from March 2013.

KEY FINDINGS

• 27.6% of Michigan residents have been told that they are entitled to have their pain managed as a basic part of their health care statistically unchanged from 28.0% in March 2011.

• 89.4% of respondents agree that acute pain can be effectively managed with today’s pain medications or other treatments. This number has been statistically the same in all three survey at 89.0% in 2009 and 91.9% in 2011. 64.8% strongly agree with this statement as compared to 64.4% who strongly agreed in 2011.

• By a margin of 67.2%-27.2% respondents agree that people do not seek pain treatment because they fear becoming addicted to pain medication. In 2011 the margin was 64.9%-28.9%,. In 2009 the margin was 60.7%-30.5%.

o Growth in agreement with this statement is coming from increased support from residents under the age of 34 years old. The chart below looks at growth in support for this statement with residents 18-24 and with residents 25-34.

Age 2009 2011 2013

18-24 48.9% 64.0% 72.6%

30-34 64.7% 67.3% 74.7%

• 27.7% of Michigan residents have sought treatment from a health care professional for an acute pain condition in the past year, statistically unchanged from 28.2% who received treatment in the 2009 survey and 29.0% who received treatment in the 2011 survey. Respondents report a pain level of 7.20 prior to seeking treatment and a pain level of 3.00 after seeking treatment. In 2011, respondents reported a pain level of 7.30 prior to seeking treatment and a pain level of 3.0 after seeking treatment. In 2009, respondents reported a pain level of 7.02 prior to seeking treatment and a pain level of 2.75 after seeking treatment.

▪ 31.1% of respondents without insurance reported seeking acute pain treatment while 27.2% of respondents with insurance reported seeking acute pain treatment. This is a reversal in the past two surveys. In 2011 22% of non-insured respondents sought treatment while 30% with insurance sought treatment for acute pain. In 2009 29.0% of insured respondents ought treatment and 20.6% of non-insured respondents sought treatment.

▪ 25.3% of Michigan residents have sought treatment from a health care professional for a chronic pain condition in the past year as compared to 27.2% in 2011 and 24.3% in 2009. Respondents reported a pain level of 7.30 prior to seeking treatment and a pain level of 3.90 after seeking treatment. In 2011 they went in with a pain level of 7.60 and out with a level of 4.00. In 2009, respondents reported a pain level of 7.47 before seeking treatment and a pain level of 3.67 after seeking treatment. In 2013, respondents with chronic pain conditions report their current pain level at 4.60. They reported levels of 4.70 in 2011 and 4.22 in 2009.

▪ By a margin of 74.3%-22.2%, respondents with a chronic pain condition are satisfied with the treatment they did or are receiving for their condition statistically unchanged from 75.0%-20.2% in the 2011 survey.

▪ Respondents were asked over the past year if they had received pain treatment from a list of health care professionals. 2013 findings are in the left column. 2011 findings are in the middle column in parenthesis. 2009 findings are in the right column in bold in parenthesis.

• 51.6% (50.0%) (54.8%) had received care from a primary care provider, general practice doctor, osteopathic nurse, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant.

• 14.8% (13.0%) (14.2%) received care from a chiropractor.

• 14.2% (14.6%) (14.4%) received care from a physical therapist.

• 12.4% (11.8%) (13.1%) received care from an orthopedic physician.

• 12.0% (12.8%) (11.0%) received care from a surgeon.

• 11.5% (7.4%) (8.6%) received care from a massage therapist.

Respondents receiving massage therapy jumped from 7.4% to 11.5%.

• 6.2% of respondents indicated that they had a physician or health care provider show a reluctance or refusal to prescribe what the respondents thought was an effective type or amount of pain medication. This figure is statistically unchanged from 6.9% in the 2011 survey.

• 25.2% of respondents have had an acute or chronic pain condition for which they did not seek medical treatment, statistically unchanged from 24.5% in the 2011 survey and 23.8% in the 2009 survey. By a wide margin, uninsured respondents are the most likely to not seek treatment with 43.2% of uninsured respondents saying they did not seek treatment for a chronic pain condition.

• In the past year, 15.7% of respondents have had an acute or chronic pain condition which prevented them from either going to work or doing their job while at work – a slight drop from 18.1% in the 2011 survey but still within the survey’s overall margin of error.

• Overall, there appears to be little movement outside of the margin of error between the 2011 survey results and the 2013 survey results.

When people talk about pain, they are talking about two different types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain refers to a pain that is generally temporary and short-lived such as a toothache, a strained muscle, an injury, or the pain following surgery. Chronic pain, on the other hand, tends to be continuous and recurring and may be caused by illnesses or ongoing conditions such as arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, or a number of other on-going health problems.
