About the Book: Summer of the Monkeys is about a fourteen year old boy named Jay Berry who grows up in the rural, newly settled parts of Northeastern Oklahoma. Jay Berry helps his family run their farm and he tries to earn enough money to buy a pony and a rifle. One day their only cow escapes and Jay Berry and his loyal companion, Rowdy, go looking for it in what is known as the Cherokee bottoms. Rowdy and Jay Berry find the cow and decided to look around. In no time Rowdy trees a strange animal, a monkey. Jay Berry learns that monkeys have escaped from a circus train wreck, and that they are worth enough money to buy a rifle and a pony. Repeated attempts to trap the monkeys result in disasters for Jay and his dog Rowdy. After each mishap, Jay Berry receives special nursing treatment from his physically challenge twin sister, Daisy. Daisy is in need for surgery to fix her disability, but the family does not have the money. Jay is determined to catch the monkeys and receive the big reward. Will Jay Berry trap the monkeys? What will he do with the reward? This book is filled with thrills and dangers no one will ever forget.

1. In the search button type in America during the 1800’s and click search.

2. Click on Homes in the 1800’s and write a paragraph (5 sentences) about the homes during the early 1800’s. Jay Berry lived in a log cabin. Find a picture of a log cabin home.

3. Click on Food in the earlier 1800’s. What was the diet consisting of during this time period?

4. Click on Education the earlier 1800’s: What kind of education did the children have at this age?

5. Click on the 2 button at the bottom of the page and click on Clothes in the earlier 1800’s. Describe the clothing they wore.

3. Cherokee Bottoms. Jay Berry spends lots of time at the Cherokee Bottoms. Who

are the Cherokee’s and how did they get to Oklahoma? Go to the following website
