The Director will help the University decide on strategic direction, major initiatives and how to deploy our efforts and resources to best effect. The Director will also ensure we have a clear view of our performance, against our own plans and compared with our competitors, targeting specific issues that hinder our positioning. The Director will shape and direct a new Strategic Planning service, developing it into a first-class professional service that supports the University’s strategic endeavours. Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the postStrategic Planning:The University is looking to fundamentally change its overall approach to the use of data to support and drive strategic planning and performance management. The Director will lead the overall approach to this change, providing leadership on data acquisition, management and use, and putting in place the professional team who will deliver this. The Director will work closely with the Vice-Chancellor, and the University Leadership Team. The Director will be responsible for supplying the data and analysis to support strategic plans and monitor their implementation. The Director will work with senior leaders and managers in the Faculties and Professional Services, helping each of them through their own thinking and decision-making and ensuring that plans across the University coalesce and deliver on the University Strategy. The Director will ensure that major strategic initiatives across the University are connected, co-ordinated and deliver on core strategic objectives.Analysis and Advisory – Policy and Politics:The Director will be a source of expert advice and support to the Vice-Chancellor and senior colleagues. This will involve evaluation of the wider policy landscape and of how changes to it impact on the University from a quantitative perspective. Awareness of the wider public policy environment will be key, together with building networks within Higher Education and beyond for the benefit of the University. Insight:Working with the University Leadership Team, the Director will oversee and manage a review of the University’s Key Performance Indicators. This will lead on to a fresh approach to reporting on these KPIs and wider PIs to the University’s governing body (Council), senior University figures and committees, so that they have access to the right level of evidence and information to support their scrutiny of current performance and future aspirations. The Director will also be responsible for ensuring that staff at all levels of the University have the appropriate knowledge and training to access and use data analysis relevant to their work.Performance Management:The University is introducing a new planning cycle and process. The Director will play a key role in advising on key data sets to support the process, on producing data at appropriate times in the cycle and on ensuring that those in leadership roles across the University have a detailed understanding of what the relevant data mean.Leadership and management of the new service:The Director will shape and lead the development of a new Strategic Planning service, focused on supporting better-informed decisions on our strategic priorities. The Director will be responsible for reviewing all those areas and personnel who are engaged in data analysis and reporting, and for shaping them into a high-performing and dynamic service across the key functions of Strategic Planning and Data & Insight. This should be informed by good practice elsewhere, and draw on innovations proven to be effective and adaptable. The Director will be strong leader who is able to impact beyond their immediate environment. This will involve working with staff across the University to identify priorities and to provide resources and support where it is most needed.
