It i s t h e i n t e n t t h a t this s t o r y s h a l l depict t h e a r e a known as

t h e F a i m o u n t s e c t i o n of Hackensack, New Jersey as it was around t h e

y e a r 1915 and t o impart as much howledge a s I have of t h e area, as

t o who l i v e d where and t o d e s c r i b e t h e beauty of this r u r a l atmosphere

i n which it was our good f o r t u n e t o have been raised.

For some background information, it would be w e l l t o point o u t ( 1 )

t h a t t h e region known as Cherry KFll extended from about Howland Avenue

i n River Edge south t o about Poplar Avenue i n Hackensack and t h a t (2)

t h e F a i m o u n t a r e a was once h o r n a s Zingzam and the r a i l r o a d s t a t i o n

was known as Zingzam.

The m e was derived from Mr. Zingzem, a r c h i t e c t

of F a i m o u n t Park i n Philadelphia from whence Fairmount g o t i t s name.

The name Cherry Hill was o f f i c i a l l y abandoned i n t h e l a t e 1890's,

following t h e Cherry H i l l tornado, and f o r o t h e r good reasons. The name

of Fairmount seemed p r e f e r a b l e t o t h a t of Zingzam, t h e man who owned

most o f t h e a r e a from t h e point a t Poplar Avenue n o r t h t o t h e t m s h i p

l i n e which was Coles Brook. (Hackensack City was New Barbadoes Township

u n t i l t h e referendum i n 1921)

S t a r t i n g a t a p i n t where Poplar Avenue meets Main S t r e e t , on t h e

e a s t s i d e o f k i n S t r e e t was t h e huge Campbell Wall Paper Co, (photo

s e t t i n g back 250 f e e t o r more from Main S t r e e t , with i t s wcpansive lawn.

A b a s e b a l l f i e l d was i n t h e southwest corner of t h e i r property, j u s t o f f

of Main S t r e e t and a small p i t c h and p u t t golf layout sarmunded t h e plant.

A r a i l r o a d siding extended along t h e north s i d e of t h e factory, joining t h e

two l i n e s e c t i o n of t h e Id. J. & N.Y.

on t h e e a s t side of Main Street, w a s Fairmount Park and i n t h e northeast end

of t h e Park on the corner of Main & Cross stood a small building which was

our m a i l each day when we f i r s t moved t o Coles Avenue,

moved from t h e Park t o a spot on t h e south s i d e o f Fairmount Avenue near

Main S t r e e t and l a t e r became a f i s h market, a meat market and f i n a l l y a

Proceding north on t h e e a s t s i d e of Main, where Johnson Avenue now

terminates and where a bank now stands, was Burlews Heal Estate office.,

operated f o r many years u n t i l Ruckdeschel operated a saloon there, and then

many years l a t e r it became Costa's Market,

In t h e r e a r of t h i s s t r u c t u r e was

t h e Fairmount Bottling Works of O.H.Krause,

located in t h e Lane.

N e x t t o t h e Lane was the house of Bob Mauthe, Kappes l i v e d there before

Rob was married, and next t o t h a t was Nauthe1s General s t o r e , 3 steps up in

the center of the three s t o r e s now located there.

t h e s t o r e md on the corner where Kopf's l i q u o r s t o r e now stands was a shed

closed i n on three sides, where t h e cows of Mrs. Eiauthe were stabled. A picket

fence enclesed t h i s area i n on two s i d e s

- Main S t r e e t and Orchard Street.
