Strep Throat InformationDear Parents/Guardians,We are seeing more cases of strep throat at school than we usually do. Because of this, if your child has a confirmed case, they need to stay out of school for 48 hours (instead of 24 hours) after they have started taking antibiotics. Strep throat is caused by bacteria, and is passed to one another through mouth and nose secretions. It usually starts with a very sore throat and a fever. Taking antibiotics usually works well. Without medicine, strep can go on to more serious problems, such as rheumatic fever, scarlet fever and kidneys problems. Strep may also cause a skin infection called impetigo, which looks like yellow-crusted sores around the nose and mouth. If your child has a sore throat that does not go away after 24 hours, a fever, a red bumpy rash or yellow-crusted sores around the nose or mouth, please do not send your child to school. Your child will need to be seen by your health care provider so a test (culture) can be done to find out if your child has strep. Please tell him/her that there are more cases of strep in your child’s school. If the culture is positive and antibiotics are ordered, please do not send your child to school until he/she has taken 48 hours’ worth of antibiotics. Your child must take all of the antibiotics, even if they seem better to prevent more serious problems. We realize that keeping your child home for 48 hours may be hard for your family because your child seems well, but it is the best way to make sure your child gets well and prevents other children from getting sick. Please remind your child about the importance of throwing away used tissues and frequent hand washing with soap and warm water.
