A. Author’s nationality?
B. Time period when the poet lived and/or the poem was written
C. Is there anything about the author that adds clarity to what the poem is about or what the poem means?
Title: What is the title of the poem you are analyzing?
A. Is the title appropriate to the subject? (Yes/No) What is the subject?
B. What is the tone and/or genre?
C. Does the title generate interest? (Yes/No)
D. Does the title hint at what your poem is about? (Yes/No)
Subject: What is the basic situation?
A. Who is talking?
B. What are the circumstances?
C. In 30 words or less write in your own words what the poet is saying.
Shape:
A. To what is the author appealing: intellect or emotion (or something else)?
B. What structure (s) has the author used (progressions, comparisons, analogies, bald assertions, etc.) Provide at least one example.
Tone: What is the author’s attitude as reflected in tone?
A. What is the author’s tone (angry, sad, happy, thoughtful, etc?)
B. Is the tone appropriate to the content and to the audience?
Word Choice: Why did the author choose to express himself/herself with the words you find in this poem?
A. List the strong verbs (action words). How do the verbs move the poem along?
