Mr. Aruego writes and rewrites his story until it flows. He then extends his story through the pictures. José has an additional challenge in his books because the picture book format is told with text and pictures in 32 pages.

1. Have the children take one of their stories that could be told in picture book format.

2. Revise it to be told in 32 pages. (This is the number of pages authors have to tell their story in picture books.) To help them plan their story, have them do it in storyboard.

3. After the story is organized and rewritten, the student will then plan the illustrations that could be added to enhance the story. (Use José’s books as an example of good illustrating. His illustrations extend and give additional details to the story. They do not repeat the story with illustrations.)

3. After the story is organized and rewritten, collect the stories and have an unknown person illustrate the story. Since most illustrators do not collaborate with the author, do not allow the children to discuss this process.

4. When the illustrations are finished, collect and redistribute to the author. Read the stories and discuss to determine if the illustrations match the purpose of the story and improve its understanding.
