January’s B.I.G. Theme: We Can Talk to God

Today’s Bible Story – 1 King 3:3-15, 4:29-34, 5-9

Good morning! Today we are going to hear the story of a wise king, King Solomon. Solomon was king of the Israelites which were God’s people. God wanted his people to obey him and always be good and kind to each other and Solomon knew this. Solomon wanted to do God’ s will. One night in a dream God spoke to Solomon and said “Ask what I should give you”. What do you think Solomon asked for? What do you think a king would ask for? What would you ask for? Let’s watch our puppet show today and see what Solomon asked for.

So, Solomon asked for the right thing, didn’t he? God was very please with Solomon because he didn’t ask for riches or gold. He wasn’t greedy. He didn’t ask to be the strongest man in the world or the most powerful king. He knew that the best thing for the king of God’s people to have was the wisdom to make good choices and be a good ruler and help all the people understand how to act and how to obey God’s word. And he built that awesome temple. Can you believe it took 7 years to build it? Things took a lot longer back then but lots of people helped and they didn’t stop until they finished. And Solomon prayed to God for guidance the whole time. And even thought Solomon didn’t pray about being rich or famous he did become a very famous king because God helped be such a good king. Everyone remembered what a great king he was and what a great temple he built.

I’m going to pretend I’m King Solomon and I’m going to tell you some things to do. I want you to tell me if they are good choices or bad choices. If it’s a good choice I want you to shout “Yes!” and if it’s not a good choice I want you to shout “No!”. King Solomon says.. Obey your parents, clean up your room, take something that doesn’t belong to you, tell the truth, wait your turn, don’t pick up your toys, give a friend a hug, say please and thank you. Good job! I think you all know how to make good choices. Let’s pray. Dear God, thank you for listening to our prayers. Help us to always make the right choices. When we make good choices we know that we are helping show God’s love. Amen.

Puppet show (Whiskers, Ribit)

Whiskers: Hey Ribit. Do you know what our bible story is about today? It’s about King Solomon. Have you heard about him?

Ribit: Yeah, I think so. Isn’t he the one that built that great big temple?

Whiskers: Yes, Ribit, that’s the one. But before he built the temple God came to him in a dream and said “Ask what I shall give you”. And do you know what he asked for?

Ribit: Um..all the riches in the world?

Whiskers: No.

Ribit: Um..did he ask to be the biggest, strongest, fastest man in the world?

Whisker: Wrong again.

Ribit: OK, one last try. He wanted to be the most powerful king in the world and have everyone bow down to him.

Whiskers: No, Ribit. He asked God for an understanding mind.

Ribit: Hmm.. an understanding mind. Well that’s a good thing to pray for I guess. Like he wanted be really smart and know lots of different things?

Whiskers: Well, yes, he wanted to be smart. But not so that he cold be rich or famous or powerful. He said to God,“O God, you have made me king and I thank you. I want to be a good king. I need the wisdom to know right from wrong. Please give me an understanding mind so I can rule your people well”. You see, Solomon wanted to be wise for the sake of God’s kingdom, not just for himself. He wanted to be a wise ruler of God’s people and do the right thing according to God.

Ribit: Wow. He must have been a pretty great king. I think I’ll try to be more like Solomon. I’m not king of the pond or anything like that but I can always talk to God and pray to him about making good choices.. right after I make a choice about dinner. Hmm, I see some pretty tasting looking flies back at the pond. Gotta go!

Whiskers: Boys and girls, I hope you enjoyed our story today. I know that you are learning about God and learning to pray to God and he will help you be wise like Solomon and be able to make good choices in your life. We’ll see you back at the pond next week!
