LOJ #125: ‘Overtaken Pt. 2’

Andover Baptist Church-November 20th, 2011

Opening

A. Text for today is Luke 11:19-26 and our sermon is titled

‘Overtaken Pt. 2’

B. Scripture NET: (includes verses 14-18 as recap)

“11:14 Now He was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the man who had been mute began to speak, and the crowds were amazed. 11:15 But some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons, He casts out demons.” 11:16 Others, to test Him, began asking for a sign from heaven. 11:17 But Jesus, realizing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and a divided household falls. 11:18 So if Satan too is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? I ask you this because you claim that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 11:19 Now if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 11:20 But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has already overtaken you. 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are safe. 11:22 But when a stronger man attacks and conquers him, he takes away the first man’s armor on which the man relied and divides up his plunder. 11:23 Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters. 11:24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it passes through waterless places looking for rest but not finding any. Then it says, ‘I will return to the home I left.’ 11:25 When it returns, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 11:26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so the last state of that person is worse than the first.”

C. Children’s Sermon (SLIDE)

1. Do you notice that picture on the screen?

2. Can you tell me what is going on in that picture?

3. Why did Jesus go to the cross?

4. Did the devil win because Jesus died on the cross?

5. No, he lost because Jesus didn’t stay dead!

accused Jesus of using the devil to kick out the

devil

c. Others wanted a sign from heaven that He was

from God, obviously something in neon I guess

(Son of God now showing 33 years only with

return appearance in the future)

d. Jesus told them how foolish their thinking was

(makes no sense for the devil to evict himself)

e. And here we find ourselves today

2. Over the last few weeks I’m sure many of you have

heard about Occupy Wall Street, eventually, if history

serves itself, those who are protesting will leave or get

evicted

Sermon

READ: Luke 11:19-22 (Scripture slide)

“11:19 Now if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 11:20 But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has already overtaken you. 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are safe. 11:22 But when a stronger man attacks and conquers him, he takes away the first man’s armor on which the man relied and divides up his plunder.”

A. 'by whom do your sons cast them out'

1. 'sons' = used here for a pupil or adherent,

2. It follows logically that if the casting out of demons is

done by the power of Beelzebul, then they and their own

exorcists stand condemned by their own statements.

3. The Pharisees and Scribe’s very own students would

stand up and testify against them in this case that it is

God and not the devil who evicts the demons

B. The only other option about Jesus

1. It’s plainly obvious that Jesus is against and not

powered by the devil

2. It can only mean that by the very ‘finger of God’ Jesus

receives His authority

3. The finger of God indicates all of His authority and

power

Deuteronomy 9:10 (NET) “The Lord gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God, and on them was everything he said to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that assembly.”

Psalm 8:3 (NET) “When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place”

4.  Jesus’ logic is as follows: If it is not the devil that casts

out these demons, it is God and He is upon you

testifying to His Son Jesus the Christ.

5. The very fact that the demons flee proves that Jesus is

advancing the Kingdom of God over them, this is a

frontal assault and it is decimating the enemy

6. This should terrify the critics of Jesus more than the

demons.

7. No one, no power, nothing can defy Him

C. The battle of the strong man vs. the Strongest Man has begun

  1. A powerful man, strong in his ability to defend himself

is safer than one who is weaker

2. The only way a powerful man can be defeated in combat

is if one who is stronger than he defeats him

3. When the stronger man wins he collects all that the

other man had as his own, even taking away the

former’s defensive armor.

4. This would be a humiliating defeat for the strong man

5. Jesus is kicking down the devils doors and evicting them

from the homes they have possessed

6. The devil has been overcome and what was formerly the

devils is now Jesus, those Jesus frees are His

7. Scripture testifies to this battle and victory numerous

times

Genesis 3:15 (NET) “And I will put hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; her offspring will attack your head, and you will attack her offspring’s heel.”

John 12:31 (NET) “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.”

John 14:30 (NET) “I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over Me”

John 16:11 (NET) “…the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

Ephesians 4:8 (NET) “Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he captured captives; he gave gifts to men.”

1 John 3:8 (NET) “The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed: to destroy the works of the devil.”

1 John 4:4 (NET) “You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Colossians 2:15 (NET) “Disarming the rulers and authorities ,He has made a public disgrace of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

8. What does this mean? While the enemy rails against us

from every side it is futile, the war has been won, and

for those who come to Jesus, they are set free!

READ: Luke 11:23 (Scripture slide)

“Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters.”

A. Jesus is the Strongest of the strong.

1. The First and the Last.

2. The Omnipotent One.

  3. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

4. Every knee will bow before Him and every tongue will

confess that He is Lord.

5. Not the devil nor his army can withstand Jesus’ might.

6. No power, no authority is above Jesus.

7. Those who assemble against Him will be scattered.

8. To stand against Him is to secure your own defeat.

9. Those who are not for Jesus are for the side of evil

(outside of Jesus sanctifying those who are His own,

there is no one who is good)

10. It doesn’t matter what mantel you carry or how peace

loving you seem, whether you’re a Buddhist, a Hindu,

a Muslim, a Taoist, an Atheist, a cultist or a

Satanist….they all are without Christ and each stands

against Him

11. There is no such thing as political correctness: there is

only right and wrong

12. Those who are not with Jesus are against Him and

nobody falls between them

13. One is either heaven bound or hell bound….and you

my friends are going to one or the other, which one

have you chosen?

B. You can’t worship Jesus AND Beelzebul

1. Now to be fair some sitting here today think they aren’t

worshiping another god

2. But anything you put before Jesus IS a god

3. Joshua told the people of Israel this in Joshua 24:15

“If you have no desire to worship the Lord, choose today whom you will worship, whether it be the gods whom your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my family will worship the Lord!”

4. I’m going to tell you something you may not like to

hear, but tough cookies I’m not called to make you like

me

5. Sitting in this church isn’t going to save you one bit

6. Christ knows you, I mean He really, really knows you

7. He knows whether or not you are His or you are the

devil's

  8. You can’t live one way and pretend to be something else

9. Like Judas you kiss Jesus with the lips that are tainted

with the filth of your true master, the devil

10. And one day, mark my words Church, you will come

before Him and He will vomit you out of kingdom for

being the traitor you are

Revelation 3:15–16 (NET) “15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot! 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth!”

11. The call I give to you today is the same Elijah gave the

people of Israel. ‘How long are you going to be

paralyzed by indecision, If the Lord is the true God,

then follow Him, but it is [Beezebul], follow him!’

READ: Luke 11:24-26 (Scripture slide)

“11:24 When an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it passes through waterless places looking for rest but not finding any. Then it says, ‘I will return to the home I left.’ 11:25 When it returns, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 11:26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so the last state of that person is worse than the first.”

A. The demon here comes 'out of a person'

1. But this leaving out of a person was a temporary thing.

  2. Either the spirit was cast out and nothing replaced it (i.e.

the Holy Spirit) or it got bored and moved on.

3. Without God no being either flesh and blood or spiritual

can find true, lasting contentment

Isaiah 48:22 (NET) “There will be no prosperity for the wicked,” says the Lord.”

Isaiah 57:20–21 (NET) “20 But the wicked are like a surging sea

that is unable to be quiet; its waves toss up mud and sand.

21 There will be no prosperity,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

B. Finding no contentment it says: 'I will return home'

1. The Angels of God reside in places of absolute beauty in

the presence of the Lord with the fullness of

existence…..those who reject God have none of that

2. Notice that the word ‘home’ is used for the possessed

person

3. It’s a place of ownership, of simi-comfort.

C. To its dissatisfaction it’s ‘house’ is swept clean

1. Mt 12:44 tells us the house is 'empty' as well

2. This could represent all people who toy with coming to

know Christ, but never truly does it, so close only to

fall away

3. The person’s life has been swept clean, the junk has

been kicked out, but unfortunately the house does not

have a new tenant that is Holy and omnipotent.

4. Notice what Jesus says in Mark 9:25

“Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

D. 'seven other spirits more evil than itself'

1. It’s so clean the demon cannot stand the lack of filth and

invites 7 more spirits that are more wicked than itself

2. Shows us that there are levels of wickedness

3. 7 is the number of completeness, so this could

symbolize complete evil

4. The word 'possessed' literally means 'seized'

5. So here we have a forced repossession of a house that

has been morally foreclosed on

6. There is only one thing that can protect someone from

this: The house has a new resident: the Holy Spirit

E. The person is 'worse than at first'

1. The dwelling becomes even more depraved and wicked

than it was with just the one.

2. What is really being said here (a couple of things)

a. During the days of John the Baptist Israel

appeared to be a cleaned up house…

1. But the house was only empty not

filled….

2. At first Israel opened their arms to Jesus,

by this time they were on the verge of

crucifying Him….in a worse state than

when they first met Him

3. The evil of Israel is exponentially greater

in the fact that they are on the verge of

murdering their own intended Savior

4. Matthew shed the light on this in 12:45

“Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so the last state of that person is worse than the first. It will be that way for this evil generation as well!”

f. This has relevance to individuals as well

a. If you try to clean up your life and you

sweep all the bad stuff out of your life,

b. But don't come to Christ and let Him give

you the gift of the Holy Spirit

c. The evil will return in the form of an

avalanche (stars who continually clean

themselves up only to find themselves

relapsing back into even worse habits)

d. Only Christ can do that and in His own

time

READ: Luke 11:27, 28 (Scripture slide)

"11:27  As  He said these things, a woman in the crowd spoke out  to Him, “Blessed is the womb   that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed!”  11:28 But He replied,   “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”

A. A woman amazed at Jesus, marveled at how blessed His

mother should be.

B. Jesus made the distinction here that the people who are really

blessed are those who hear His words and obey them.

C. Hearing alone is not enough.

D. Do you understand what that means for you and I?

E. It means that we cannot just sit back and hear what God is

saying and think that He will be satisfied with that

Application (slide)

A. You have a responsibility to respond, are you?

B. Who lives in you?
