Assignment 11.5 Brief
|Qualification |BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Applied Biology) |
|Unit number and title |Unit 11: Physiology of human body systems |
|Start date |11/04/2016 |
|Deadline |27/05/2016 |
|Assessor name |Ms Fensome |
|Assignment title |The lymphatic system |
|The purpose of this assignment is to relate the structure of the lymphatic system to its function. |
|Scenario |
|You are an information officer for a hospital immunology department. You need to produce resources to be used as visitor information and training |
|material. The resources must convey information regarding the function of the lymphatic system. They must demonstrate how the body responds to any |
|invading pathogens. |
|Task 1 |P7: Describe the structure and purpose of the lymphatic system. |
|Make a poster to show the structure and functions of the lymphatic system. You will need to show the positions of vessels, nodes and other lymphoid |
|organs in the body. Add annotations that describe the functions of these parts of the lymphatic system and how they protect the body. |
|Due date: This provides evidence for P7 |
|Task 2 |M5: Explain how the lymphatic system protects the body. |
|Make models or 3D posters or an annotated flow diagram to explain how the lymphatic system protects the body. You need to include reference to the |
|filtering at nodes and to the roles of macrophages and B and T lymphocytes. Use a range of sources to help you complete this task. |
|Due date: This provides evidence for M5 |
|Task 3 |D3: Explain the difference in lymphatic function in health and disease state. |
|Prepare a presentation to explain how the lymphatic functions during good health and infection may differ. You must use data evaluation to illustrate |
|this difference, showing the underlying mechanisms. Remember that every day our bodies are exposed to pathogens and the lymph nodes filter out |
|bacteria but we do not suffer any symptoms and are not aware of this. If pathogenic bacteria invade in suitable numbers then we need to mount an |
|immune response. |
| |
|Due date: This provides evidence for D3 |
|Evidence checklist |
|[Summarise evidence required, e.g. ‘leaflet’, ‘presentation notes’ etc.] | [tick boxes] |
|Explain the structure of the lymphatic system and its role in protecting the body. This will take the form of a poster | |
|annotated to illustrate the function of each component. | |
|Explain how the lymphatic system protects the body. A range of sources should be used to exemplify your work. | |
|Use data evaluation to illustrate lymphatic functional loss in disease and explain the underlying mechanisms. You must be able | |
|to explain the difference in lymphatic function in health and disease state. | |
