Department: Student Affairs Reports To: Dean of Students & Admissions

PURPOSE:

The Resident Life Coordinator for Student Affairs is a full-time, live-in professional staff member whose primary purpose is to support student programing, advising, and coordinates summer programing. The Resident Life Coordinator advises and supports the student staff and enthusiastically aids in the planning and implementation of all resident student programming supported in the residential areas. They are expected to blend structured office hours with flexible in-hall time in order to create a schedule that allows them to be available and to have frequent contact with students and student staff members. The Resident Life Coordinator serves as a positive role model within the campus community by actively supporting the mission, philosophy, and programs of the entire university. The Resident Life Coordinator is expected to exercise creativity, to be highly visible, and be substantially involved in campus life.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Student Staff Supervision

o Directly supervises 7 Resident Assistants

o Manages resident hall mail room operations with student worker supervision

o Holds weekly staff meetings and supervisory meetings.

o Participates in the recruitment, hiring, training, performance accountability, and evaluation of all student staff in designated area

• Student Engagement

o Follows up with students of concern to assess needs and makes appropriate referrals.

o Establishes and maintains positive relationships with students living in the residence hall through personal contacts, meetings, discussions, and referrals to campus resources.

o Intervenes and engages with students to support the University’s retention efforts.

o Serves as primary student conduct officer of the residence hall; interpret university policy, and adjudicate policy violations. Create appropriate and effective sanctions for policy violations.

o Provides timely follow up related to student referrals and concerns.

o Mediates roommate and community concerns.

o Participates regularly in residential life and campus activities.

• Programmatic Development and Support

o Develops and facilitates creative social and educational programs for students.

o Schedules campus-wide programming and tabling initiatives

o Maintains an active, visible, and accessible presence within the residential community.

o Interprets and applies department curriculum for individual staff.

o Supports departmental assessment efforts, utilizing data to inform community building, programmatic planning, and execution.

o Manages program supply procurement for the Department on a weekly basis.

• Administrative

o Follows all University of Maine employee guidelines and policies.

o Approves and facilities all room assignment change requests.

o Performs routine maintenance and safety inspections of the residential area and health and safety checks of student living spaces.

o Submits work orders and track completion to insure a well-maintained living environment for our students.

o Recommends facilities enhancements

o Processes correspondence and maintains records through student conduct tracking system.

o Utilizes calendar sharing and other modes of department-designated technology to support inter-office communication.

o Attends all required trainings, staff meetings, and functions.

o Assists with all hall openings and hall closings.

o Other reasonably related tasks and projects as deemed appropriate by supervisor.

• Divisional Partnership Work

o Works with other campus partners to promote and facilitate large scale events for students throughout the course of the year.

o Serves on departmental and divisional committees.

• Student Safety and Crisis Management

o Participates in on-call rotation to provide coverage for the campus at large.

o Serves as an initial assessment and referral agent for students of concern.

o Provides support for students and staff members in crisis situations including suicidality, self-harm, sexual assault, domestic violence, and mental illness.

o Interprets and applies protocol in time sensitive situations.

o Provides guidance for student and professional staff members in emergency situations to include power outages, inclement weather, and other campus emergencies.

• Program Development

o Facilitate creative social and educational programs.

o Maintain an active, visible, and accessible presence within the residential community.

o Interpret and apply department curriculum for individual staffs.

o Support departmental assessment efforts, utilizing data to inform community building, programmatic planning, and execution.

• Liaison

o Communicates effectively and collaborates with key stakeholders including, Counseling, Admissions, Facilities, and SAIL.

o Participates in campus initiatives including new student orientations, admission open house events, and homecoming.

o Serves on departmental, divisional, and/or university committees.

o Fields communications from parents and family members of current and incoming students who voice concerns or questions about resident life and their student or the university.

o Acts as an ambassador for the university at all times.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s degree in education, human development, psychology, social work, counseling, or a related, human interaction-focused field and up to one year related experience on a college campus working with students is required. Additionally, experience with programming or event planning and implementation is expected.

Preferred requirements include: A Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or a related field and experience living and working in a residence hall environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/DYNAMICS:

The Resident Life Coordinator position is highly autonomous and requires self-motivation, initiative, creativity, and ingenuity. Many tasks include broad instructions and require some judgment when completing work in the assigned area. Communication is also important among the professional staff as a whole to provide continuity to the residential students living in all residential areas. 

The Resident Life Coordinator is expected to create a work schedule that provides accessibility to students, which should include flexibility for both night and weekend events. As office and the living space are in residential buildings, staff members should be prepared for frequent interruptions.

WORK YEAR:

Full-Time Fiscal 

WORK SCHEDULE:

Normal business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, work beyond regular business hours will be necessary in order to complete the requirements of this position. Weekend and evening work will be necessary. The employee shall establish regular office hours, and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust work hours accordingly.

SCHEDULE OF EVALUATION: In accordance with the UMPSA agreement.

SALARY: TBD, 11 month position (month off to be coordinated in consultation with supervisor)

Other compensation: As live-in personnel, the Staff Associate is provided a fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment within the residential area in addition to a block meal plan.

State Bureau of Identification background check will be required of the successful candidate.
