Course Description:
This course, a requirement for graduation, focuses on what it means to be an American.
Students will be required to read both long and short works of fiction and nonfiction, as well as
poetry. They will be asked to discuss the assigned textual readings, focusing on style, tone,
point of view, and author’s message, and to construct well supported opinion essays. The
major works will include The Crucible, A Raisin in the Sun, and Their Eyes Were Watching
God: these works will be supplemented with many non-fiction essays and articles, selected
poetry, and multiple ACT practice readings. In addition to studying American literature,
students will be working on the writing process with a focus on persuasive writing. Skills
addressed will cover topic development, organization and coherence of writing, word choice,
sentence structure, and conventions of usage and punctuation in order to advance student
writing, as well as prepare for the ACT. Students will engage in small and large group dis-
cussions, will produce writings of various lengths, and will be assessed in various formats
on ACT targeted skills.

Assignment and Attendance Policy:
All assignments are posted on the Morgan Park website , and students are given oral and written directions on the board in class. Please check routinely to stay on top of assignments, especially when a student is absent from class. It is also in your student’s best interest to have the phone number and/or email address of a classmate when extended absences may arise. All students are expected to complete all assignments.
Each student is expected to be in class on time every day. Late work will NOT be accepted unless students have excused absences (according to CPS policy) from class. If students have excused absences, they will have the opportunity to make up assignments. Students are responsible for coming to me to receive work missed and new due dates. If a student has a legitimate, excused absence, s/he may make up assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects within one week of his/her return. If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, s/he must turn in that assignment upon his/her return to school. Moreover, if a student is late to class and misses an assignment, quiz, test, or project, that student will receive a zero.
Students with extended absences due to illness may set up special arrangements with me to make up work missed.
Grading:

Grading Scale Weighting
A = 90-100% Class work - 30%
B = 80-89% Quizzes - 15%
C = 70-79% Tests - 15%
D = 60-69% Papers/Projects – 15%
F = 0-59% Homework - 10%
Midterm/Semester Exams – 15%
Grade Recovery Assistance:
Grade recovery plans will be provided for students with Ds and Fs at the first and third quarters only. Recovery plans will allow students to make up no more than 10% of the total semester grade. Please note that recovery plans do NOT guarantee a passing grade. For example, if a student earns 13% and perfectly completes a recovery plan, his/her final average is 23%/ Parents are responsible for reviewing, signing, and returning recovery contracts promptly.

Class materials must be brought to class everyday:
• Adequate supply of blue or black ink pens, # 2 pencils, and highlighters
• Adequate supply of loose-leaf lined paper
• Spiral notebook (single subject, college–rule)
• Access to a computer and internet (at home use)
• Binder with 5 dividers
Expectations/Rules
• Be present and on time each day
• Wear an ID at ALL times
• Turn in all assignments by due dates (late work will not be accepted).
• Respect yourself and every other person in the room. Cursing, teasing, yelling, arguing, and fighting will not be tolerated.
• Do not eat or drink in class.
• Students may not sleep or lay down during class. If a student does not feel well, s/he will be sent to the nurse or office to call home for an early dismissal.
• Students must come to class with all materials and assignments.
• All school-wide rules and expectations apply within the classroom (hats and electronics devices such as cell phones, I-pods, mp3s, etc are not allowed in class. If any of these items are seen, they will be taken to the dean.
Hall/Washroom Passes
• Student will only be issued passes for extreme emergencies.
• Students with restroom/water fountain access written on medical passes will be allowed to visit facilities as necessary.
Class Work Expectations
• Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and complete all class work assignments and activities.
• When working with a group, students are expected to pull their own weight, not relying on others to complete portions. Students who do not actively participate in group situations will receive lower scores or zeroes.
• When working with a group on extended projects (longer than one class day with work to be done at home), students are expected to work with their groups on their assigned tasks and the final formatting of their projects/assignments.
• Procedures for Seeking Extra Help: Students must let me know if they need extra help as soon as possible. We will set up a mini-tutoring session within 24 hours. These tutoring sessions may take place during their lunch periods, before school, or after school.

It is my firm belief that student success can be achieved when we work in partnership: teacher, student, and parent. Students will work on their literary analysis skills. These will include working toward the literary analysis essay, the PSAE (ACT+ Work Keys), and honing their voice via the writing process (Interactive Orals, Reflective Statement, and Supervised Writing). In order to maximize your son/daughter’s education, I ask that you view my page once a week on the Morgan Park website, . It is at this site that you can view our daily assignments and upcoming projects and tests. In addition, I ask that you complete the attached introductory questionnaire so that I know the best way to communicate with you.
