POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION: Cherokee County Lead Adult Education Instructor

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Full-time position. Under supervision of the Executive Director of Adult Education, teaches subject areas contained in the GED® Tests. Prepares lesson plans. Provides learner guidance to students. Evaluates students' progress in attaining goals. Supervises staff. Promotes the adult education program in the community. Organizes an Adult Education Advisory Committee. Prepares and maintains required documentation and reports. Plans, organizes and participates in staff development. Maintains a secure classroom environment. Assists with recruitment, retention and job placement efforts. Recruits, supervises, and directs classroom volunteers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Educational Level: A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university preferably in education, business or a related field.

• Teaching and classroom management experience at the secondary or post-secondary level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working with GED preparation students in an open-entry, multi-level classroom.

• Experience in administering standardized tests.

SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with education and experience. Benefits include paid holidays, annual leave, and the State of Georgia Flexible Benefits Program.

Job Description, Responsibilities, Standards, and Qualifications

Job Description:

Under supervision of the Executive Director of Adult Education, teaches subject areas contained in the GED® Tests. Prepares lesson plans. Provides learner guidance to students. Evaluates students' progress and in attaining goals. Supervises staff. Promotes the adult education program in the community. Organizes an Adult Education Advisory Committee. Prepares and maintains required documentation and reports. Plans, organizes and participates in staff development conferences. Maintains a secure classroom environment. Assists with recruitment, retention and job placement efforts. Recruits, supervises, and directs classroom volunteers.

1. Teach subject areas contained in the GED Tests. Deliver effective instruction in Language Arts –

Writing, Language Arts – Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics to enable students

to successfully pass the GED Tests.

2. Prepare lesson plans and obtain/prepare instructional materials for classroom use. Prepare

lesson plans and use appropriate teaching methods. Develop Student Education Plans (SEP) based on

the approved Curriculum Guide. Instruct students with special needs by using and/or adapting

materials to accommodate specific needs.

3. Provide learner guidance to students. Orient students, guide them in development of skills, and

evaluate their progress in attaining goals. Follow guidelines for enrolling underage students. Contact

absentees and counsel potential dropouts. Promote lifelong learning and work ethics during

instruction.

4. Evaluate students' progress and performance in attaining goals and objectives. Be able to

administer and use the results of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and the Official GED

Practice Tests to measure student progress. Record pre and post-test data, other indicators of

progress, and goal accomplishment. Report results to appropriate personnel and provide feedback to

students. Recommend GED testing when appropriate. Maintain confidentiality of student

information.

5. Supervises staff. Supervise instructional and administrative staff to ensure adult education

instruction, administrative requirements, and service to the community at various sites in the county

are accomplished in a professional manner.

6. Promote the adult education program to public and private organizations. Provide appropriate

adult education information in community meetings. Promptly respond to customer inquiries. Assist

with student recruitment and retention efforts. Recruit, supervise and direct classroom volunteers as

needed. Organize an Adult Education Advisory Committee.

7. Prepare and maintain all required documentation and administrative reports. Prepare and

submit student’s progress and participation reports. Conduct follow-up surveys. Analyze data for

program improvement.

8. Maintain a secure classroom environment. Ensure students understand and comply with the Student Code of Conduct. Inspect classrooms for security and sanitation issues. Report potential hazards and implement emergency procedures as needed.

9. Display a high level of professional commitment to the work and its purpose. Demonstrate

eagerness to assume responsibility and display a "can do" approach to work. Show persistence, seek

appropriate alternatives when obstacles arise, do things before being asked or forced to by events.

Work within the system to accomplish reasonable work goals. Show flexibility in response to change

and adapt to new methods and procedures. Accept direction and feedback from supervisor and

follow through appropriately. Work when scheduled and begin and end work as expected. Call in

when arriving late for work or when absent. Observe policies on break and lunch periods and use

work time appropriately. Participate in staff development and team conferences.

Minimum Qualifications A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required from an accredited college or university, preferably in education or a related field, plus teaching and classroom management experience in a formal classroom environment at the secondary or post-secondary level.
