YMLA 7th Grade PreAP Math Syllabus

Course Description

Students taking this course will take the 8th grade STAAR test and upon passing, advance to Algebra I next school year for a high school credit. Students will use investigative learning through question driven lectures and hands on experiments. Students will experience high rigorous levels of academics and given the opportunity to possess sufficient command of mathematical expressions, representations, and technology to communicate mathematics to a range of audiences. Students realize that mathematics is relevant and applicable in real life situations. This course has a high work load and is very fast pace as they are being prepared for high school math.

Classroom Instruction and group work

Students will be expected to work cooperatively in groups throughout the year. There will be times when students are expected to demonstrate their skills individually, but the majority of our classes will be spent in groups learning together. The only way a student will master the concepts taught is by being actively involved in their learning.

Student Assessments

Students will be assessed at the end of each week, lesson, and/or unit to monitor the progress of their learning which may include multiple choice, short answer, extended response questions, and project based learning. This is a balance program where development is based upon problem solving and understanding.

Tutoring

Tutoring is offered in the morning from 7:30am to 8:30am Monday through Thursday. Lunch tutorials are not offered. Evening times may be available upon request.

Parent Involvement

Parents, the following suggestions will help students be successful and have a positive experience in 7th grade math.

• Encourage and support risk taking on homework and while working in groups.

• Talk on a regular basis about concepts being taught.

• Read and discuss student toolkit and journal entries on occasion.

• Create an atmosphere at home where there is a designated study space and study time.

• Be open to math groups working together at homes in evenings and weekends.

• When students are asked to teach new concepts to parents, be enthusiastic and attentive.

• Offer help with homework and suggest that students get help at school when necessary.

• Look through student planners/binders and on occasion ask about organizational strategies.

• If your student needs help, start by asking them to read the problem out loud.

Homework

Homework is a weekly tool given to practice and reinforce what is taught in class. It is crucial to making all students better and more accurate mathematicians. Students will know homework schedules at the beginning of each week which can include worksheets, videos, blogs, and projects.

School Wide Binder

Every student is expected to purchase a school wide binder. Included in this binder is an agenda book where students are expected to record their objective for the day in every class. A grade will be taken weekly or bi-weekly checking for math objectives ONLY.

Attendance

Attendance is required with the Fort Worth ISD policy. A student will not be successful without regular attendance.

Interactive Notebook

Students will be responsible for updating their interactive journal in Math class this year. We well set them up and I will instruct students exactly how to use them. After that it will be their responsibility to use them in class every day and keep them updated! Only under special circumstances will students be allowed to take them out of the classroom. Journals will be checked out and checked back in. Journals are 35% of your students grade (See grading policy below).

Classroom Expectations

Not adhering to these could result in demerits, parent conference/call, detention, ISS, office referral, lowering of Citizenship Grade and/or other disciplinary action.

2. Talk at appropriate times - Not when Teacher or other students are

3. Obey school and classroom rules
