Uniform Policy

Relevant Legislation and Policy

This policy has been developed in accordance with the Education (General provisions) Act 2006 (Sections 283 and 360-363) and the Department of Education, Training and Employment’s Policy PPR: Student Dress Code (Version 4.0) in relation to implementing student dress codes in Queensland State Schools. It clearly explains the documents and standards of acceptable dress at Helensvale State School.

Uniform Policy

Helensvale State School is a full uniform school. We have a Uniform Policy which is endorsed by the Parents and Citizens Association.

The School Uniform:

• Provides ease of identification and the safety of our students

• Is important in encouraging a sense of self-esteem, belonging and self-discipline in our students

• Promotes an effective teaching and learning environment by eliminating the distraction of competition of dress and fashion at school

• Fosters mutual respect among individuals at the school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social differences

• Maximises student access to and participation in all educational experiences

All students are expected to observe the details of correct attire and must be wearing the complete dress uniform or sports uniform in accordance with school routine. Students who reside in more than one residence, are still required to adhere to Helensvale State School’s Uniform Policy. Students should present in a neat and tidy manner at all times, including on their way to and home from our school.

The uniform has been designed with elements of sun safety, comfort, climate, modesty, cost, social equity and activity taken into account. The school hat is expected to be worn to and from school.

Inappropriate Uniform

Students not in correct school uniform must have a letter from a parent/ caregiver explaining the reason for the day. The note is to be given to the class teacher at the commencement of the school day. Student will be given a uniform pass to present if questioned for the duration of incomplete uniform. A note will be accepted for specified and temporary reasons (up to a fortnight if applicable) and is not a long-term waiver of the uniform expectations.

Consequences of Non Compliance of School Uniform Policy

In the case of students’ persistent failure to observe the dress code, developed under section 360 of the Act, the following action(s) may be taken:

• Students may be offered appropriate items from the bank of uniforms held at the school, but must be washed and returned to the office the following day.

• A letter will be sent home reminding parents of the school uniform policy.

• Students who repeatedly disregard the school uniform policy may be withdrawn from school functions/ excursions/ special activities. Parents will be contacted to source the required item of uniform.

Students will be asked to remove items that are not part of the school uniform. Repeated offences will result in a phone call home and will mean the item will be held in safekeeping until 3.00pm of that day. A parent meeting will be required.

Students are reminded that any time they are in uniform they are representing Helensvale State School. Their manners, behaviour and dress standard need to ensure they are a good ambassador.
