MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL …
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM COUNCIL,
HELD ON WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 2005
PRESENT: Diane Bates, David Holmes, Karen Jenkins, Ariane Pfenninger,
Suriza Van Der Sandt, Trish Wallace, Jennifer Wang, Simona Wright.
APOLOGIES: Alan Cohen, John Pollock.
1) The composition of the Program Council was read to those assembled,
along with terms of office. It was agreed that the composition of the
Council was not what the Council would wish it to be as regards the
balance between Schools and the omission of potentially important
contributors such as the Coordinator of the French Program, Ariane
Pfenninger, who was present by invitation. It was agreed that we would
write to the Senate detailing our concerns.
2) Simona Wright was elected Chair of the Council.
3) David Holmes was elected Vice Chair of the Council.
4) The Council welcomed Karen Jenkins, the new Program Coordinator for
Undergraduate Global Programs, who then gave a detailed presentation.
National statistics were provided for "Study Abroad" programs in
2002-2003, in particular on the duration and destination for those US
students going abroad and on the country of origin for foreign students
coming to the US. It was noted that fee-paying Asian students formed the
majority in the latter category.
Karen informed the meeting that TCNJ this semester had just 11 incoming
exchange students and 4 matriculated students.
After a lengthy discussion, four areas were highlighted for action:
(a) The need to sponsor a workshop on Health/Safety/Emergency Management
issues that will be important for exchange students and for faculty
working with them.
(b) The need to change the semester imbalance regarding numbers of
students studying abroad.
(c) The need to make the campus more "international" by changing our focus
away from programs and more towards student life.
(d) The need to ascertain where the international "strengths" lie on the
campus. To provide information on this aspect it was agreed that a
campus-wide survey should be conducted to reveal (possibly
hidden)international expertise that would be of value as we
internationalize.
5) The next full meeting of the Council would be at 1.30pm on Wednesday
October 5th
