NOTES: PRESENT INDICATIVE TENSE OF –AR VERBS
The stem of the verb is everything without the –ar ending. For example, in the verb estudiar, the stem is estudi-. The ending of the verb is the –ar. To conjugate a verb (put it in the form it needs to match the subject) the –ar ending is removed and new endings are added to the stem. Here are the endings that match each of the subject pronouns:
yo -o nostros(as) -amos
tú -as vosotros(as) -áis
él, ella, Ud. -a ellos, ellas, Uds. -an
The forms of the verb estudiar are:
yo estudio nostros(as) estudiamos
tú estudias vosotros(as) estudiáis
él, ella, Ud. estudia ellos, ellas, Uds. estudian
The meanings of the verb estudiar with the endings added are:
yo estudio = I study, I am studying, I do study
tú estudias = you (informal) study, you are studying, you do study
él/ella estudia = he/she studies, he/she is studying, he/she does study
usted (Ud.) estudia = you (informal) study, you are studying, you do study
nosotros(as) estudiamos = we study, we are studying, we do study
vosotros(as) estudiáis = you all (informal) study, are studying, do study
ellos/ellas estudian = they study, they are studying, they do study
ustedes (Uds.) = you all (informal/formal) study, are studying, do study
SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
The verb ending is dependent upon the subject.
1. If one person is the subject, the equivalent subject pronoun is él or ella.
Therefore, the correct ending for the verb is -a.
2. If two or more people are the subject, the equivalent subject pronoun is ellos or
ellas. Therefore, the correct ending for the verb is -an.
3. If a person y yo are the subject, the equivalent subject pronoun is nosotros(as).
Therefore the correct ending for the verb is –amos.
4. If a person y tú are the subject, the equivalent subject pronoun is ustedes
(or vosotros). Therefore the correct ending for the verb is –an (or áis).
5. If a person y Ud. are the subject, the equivalent subject pronoun is ustedes.
Therefore the correct ending for the verb is –an.
