Verbs
Verbs are words that express action or existence.
Examples: laugh, run, is, were, do
Action verbs express actions. Examples: run, swim, eat, think.
Please underline the action verbs in the following:
1.) John drove.
2.) I ran into the parked car.
3.) Rudy yelled to the man.
4.) Principal Watts walked through the hall.
5.) The track team won its meet.
Linking verbs are verbs that join the subject of a sentence and its complement (descriptive word or words). Examples: smell, feel, get, become, be, grow, stay, turn, prove. Note- these words are commonly used as linking verbs; they are not always used as linking verbs. Example: Jim smelled nice. Jim smelled what? He smelled nice. This is a linking verb because smelled links the subject (Jim) with the adjective (nice). Jim did not actually do the smelling. One must assume that someone else smelled Jim. If one was to say Jim smelled himself, then smelled is an action verb, because Jim actually did the smelling.
Please underline the linking verbs in the following:
1.) I feel wonderful.
2.) He is nice.
3.) As I walked to school, I grew worried.
4.) I hope that the class stays interested.
5.) The mood was gloomy after the incident.
Auxiliary Verbs are verbs that help other verbs in a sentence. Examples: are, was, were, is. Note- these verbs are used as auxiliary verbs when they are used with another verb, and are not being used as linking verbs.
Please underline the auxiliary verbs and circle the action verbs in the following:
1.) The man was fishing.
2.) The class is studying.
3.) We are eating.
4.) They were going to go to the movies on Saturday night.
5.) He can swim very well.
Please circle the action verbs, underline the linking verbs, and label the auxiliary verbs with an “A” in the following:
1.) I want a new bike.
2.) He is getting a new bike.
3.) My mother told me that I am a nice person.
4.) The man is a legend.
5.) The school is one of the best in the country.
