Stops Flu at Work

Chills, sudden onset of fever, coughing, sneezing…and an important deadline at work? Or a vacation scheduled to begin tomorrow? Unfortunately, influenza (the flu) is a contagious lung disease that can ruin your best-laid plans. Each year, adults who fail to get their annual flu vaccination report millions of unnecessary cases of influenza.

In the United States an average of 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu each year, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations due to flu related complications and about 36,000 deaths. But, what the numbers don’t describe is the inconvenience caused by the flu in addition to the serious physical symptoms of the viral infection.

Working people who get the flu may find it difficult to handle their normal duties, such as jobs, child-care arrangements, household activities and caring for those who depend on them. Worse yet, another family member or co-worker may catch the virus from you before your symptoms begin.

What is influenza?

Unlike other viral respiratory infections, such as the common cold, influenza infection often causes a more severe illness.

Typical symptoms of influenza include a sudden onset of high fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, as well as headache, muscle aches, weakness and fatigue. Symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea rarely accompany influenza. The term “stomach flu” is an incorrect name. Stomach and intestinal illnesses, caused by bacteria or other microorganisms, are not actually the flu.
