How to make a graph using Excel

1. Open Excel.

2. Click on “Excel workbook” icon.

3. In cell “A1” type “mass percent”.

4. Starting in cell “A2” and moving downward, enter in the data for the independent variable (0, 5, 10, 15, & 20%).

5. In cell “B1” type “density”.

6. Starting in cell “B2” and moving downward, enter in the data for the dependent variable (density for the 5 sugar solutions in this lab).

7. Click and drag to highlight all data.

8. Next, click on the Chart Wizard Icon.

9. When step 1 “Chart Type” box appears, choose “XY Scatter” graph. Hit “enter”.

10. The graph should appear as step 2. Hit “enter” again.

11. When step 3 “Chart Options” appears, type in your name as the title, then hit “tab” key and type in the name of the independent variable (% sugar), then hit the “tab” key again and type the name of the dependent variable (density – g/mL).

12. Click on the “finish” icon.

At this point the graph should appear on the same “page” as your data.

13. Click on the word “Chart” at the top of the screen and highlight “add trendline”.

14. Choose “linear” when the menu box appears.

15. Click on the “options” tab. Click on the boxes for “display equation on chart” and “display R-squared value on chart”. Hit the “enter” key.

At this point the graph should re-appear on the same “page” as your data.

16. After your teacher checks your graph, then you can “print” a copy. Then continue on #2 of the analysis for the lab.
