Turnbull, David. Grand March from Aida, Act II, Scene 2. TriploPress TRP-???, 2016

A beautifully transcribed version of the famous Grand March, complete with five choirs of four B-flat trumpets each. Very majestic. Written for and performed as the finale at the 2016 International Trumpet Guild Conference Festival of Trumpets.

Also performed at the Brazil Trumpet Guild Annual Conference, Sao Paulo, Brazil (August 2016)

Turnbull, David. Laudi alla Vergine Maria. TriploPress TRP-142, 2014

Originally a work for female choir. Beautiful, slow and dramatic. Great for work on phrase, control, intonation, blend, and the choral style in general. Works great with four, but is most effective with more than one person on a part.

Compositions

Turnbull, David. Trumpet Fanfares. Audible Intelligence Music, 2013. Available through J.W. Pepper.

A set of five fanfares: four trumpet ensemble fanfares, for modern B-flat trumpets and timpani, composed in the late Baroque style and one modern fanfare for trumpet ensemble.

List of Consultancies, Sabbatical Leaves, and Collaborations

Sabbatical Leave (Fall 2005)

Goals for the leave: My goals for the leave were to write and print two books: a college/university level trumpet textbook and an accompanying integrated, college/university level trumpet method book.

What was accomplished: I wrote a 230-page trumpet method book, and we are currently using it in the trumpet studio here at Washington State University. It is modular so that I can easily add new material and expand each section. (I must modestly state that it is surpassing my expectations.)

I wrote all but two chapters of a trumpet textbook. The original plan was to write 14 chapters; however, during the process of writing, I decided that more material was necessary. Eighteen chapters are now planned, and I will on writing the final two chapters during the summer of 2006. The material should be printed and ready for use during the 2006-2007 academic year.

Discoveries: During the first several weeks of writing, I determined that my style needed to change from what could be described as being “catalogical” to analytical. In other words, I needed to explain what is important and why rather than simply listing undigested facts or information. I needed to explain to the student what they should do and how they should do it, or what they can do and how they can do it.

As the process unfolded, I realized that I was involved in technical writing and that the most important aspect is the reader’s ability to understand and comprehend. Therefore, before I send this material to a publisher, it is imperative that I receive feedback. I plan to use both the method book and the textbook in the trumpet studio here at Washington State University for the next several semesters. During that time, I will have the opportunity to work out any problems that I may encounter.

Already, I can see that I will need to make use of more photographs and drawings than I originally intended. Also, I believe that a CD recording of the numerous duets, trios and quartets included in the method book will significantly enhance the student’s experience. I plan to record these pieces during the summer of 2006 and create a CD that allows the student to play along with the duets, trios and quartets.

What else was accomplished: During my sabbatical, I also created a method book for trumpet ensemble. It contains a warm-up that integrates music theory, and it also includes a number of my arrangements. It too is modular so that more material can be added in the future.

I also arranged 75 Renaissance pieces for trumpet ensemble and transcribed a work by Palestrina for the Mt. View High School Brass Choir in Vancouver, Washington.

Finally, Dr. Jill Schneider and I arranged three new pieces for trumpet and organ. We hope to program these on a recital in September of 2006.
