WHEREAS,AMC 3.97establishesa meansof recognizingandhonoringpersons

18 who have substantiallycontributedto the Municipality of Anchorageby naming municipal-

19 ownedbuildings,otherfixed facilities, andpublic placesaftersuchpersons;and

WHEREAS, under AMC 3.97, this naming action may be initiated by a formal

22 requestof theAssemblyto the Mayor; and

WHEREAS,JohnP. Bagoyhasvolunteeredthousandsof hoursover the last 20

25 yearsandplayeda critical role in the successof theAnchorageMemorialParkCemetery;and

WHEREAS,JohnP. Bagoywasinstrumentalin detenniningthe exactlocationof

28 thousandsof burials from 1915to presentto includemany infants,AlaskaNatives andpioneer

29 Alaskans;and

WHEREAS,JohnP. Bagoycoordinatedefforts amongthe Cook Inlet Historical

32 Society,the Cook Inlet Region, Inc., Mr. Dan Cuddy, Mr. Ed Rasmuson,Wells Fargo, the 33 Municipality of Anchorageandmany othersto mark in excessof 3000unmarkedgravesin the

34 AnchorageMemorialParkCemetery,and

WHEREAS,JohnP. Bagoy playeda significant role in the effort to replacethe

37 dilapidatedheadstoneof our adoptednative son, Sidney Laurenceand his wife Jeannewith a

38 beautifulmarkerwhich is a wonderfuladditionto theAnchorageMemorialParkCemetery,and

WHEREAS, John P. Bagoy wrote a book titled Legends and Legacies

41 (Anchorage1910-1935)Rememberingour Buried Past, which servesas the ultimate reference

42 for researchaboutearlyAnchorage,and

5 Family exhibit in theAnchorageMuseumof History andArt, and

WHEREAS,JohnP. Bagoy'stirelessvolunteerefforts havebenefitedthe citizens

8 of the Municipality of Anchorageandthe Stateof Alaskaandbeeninstrumentalin the success

9 enjoyedby theAnchorageMemorialParkCemetery;and

WHEREAS,the AnchorageMemorial ParkCemeteryCitizen NamingPanelheld

12 a public meetingto solicit andevaluatenames,and

WHEREAS, the Citizen Naming Panel has recommendedthe 7thAvenue and

15 CordovaStreetgateat the entranceto the AnchorageMemorial Park Cemeterybe named"The

16 John P. Bagoy Gate" in recognition of his major achievementsand contributions to the

17 Municipality of AnchorageandtheAnchorageMemorialParkCemetery.

19 NOW, THEREFORE,theAnchorageAssemblyresolves:

Section1. That the walking entrancegateat 7thAvenueand Cordovain the

22 AnchorageMemorialParkCemeterybe named"The JohnP. BagoyGate".

Section2. Thatthis resolutionshalltakeeffecton Thursdayevening,June20,

25 2002 to coincide with the Cook Inlet Historical Society 2002 Summer SolsticeTour of the

26 cemetery,conductedeachsummersolsticeThursdayby JohnBagoy over the past decade,and

27 contingentuponapprovalby theAnchorageAssembly.
