Summer Solstice

Whether you think of it as the start of summer, the longest day of the year or an excuse to dance, perhaps around bonfires or a maypole, the summer solstice is a celebration of the season. Sure, it marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but it's also steeped in tradition and cultural significance throughout the world. The summer solstice is celebrated in a variety of ways across the globe, from skygazing in Croatia to sun salutations in Times Square.

In several cities and towns around the United States, summer solstice is celebrated with yoga. At Infinitie Light Yoga in Jamesville, Tony Riposo will be doing so from 9:00 am-11:00 am on Sunday, June 19th. In New York's Times Square, they hold yoga classes from sunrise to sunset. In New Mexico, summer solstice is celebrated with yoga for a week. The idea is to escape chaos and re-align the mind, body and spirit. A vegetarian solstice diet of mung beans and rice, yogi tea and potato soup is encouraged.

On the summer solstice, ancient Chinese traditions celebrate "yin" -- earth and femininity -- as opposed to the winter solstice when they celebrate "yang" -- heavens and masculinity. Their summer solstice celebration is called Xiazhi Festival, in which they have a tradition of eating noodles. From the winter solstice to the summer solstice, the days get longer, and during the summer solstice, a saying goes, "After eating noodles on the summer solstice day, daylight gets shorter day by day."

Swedes go all out for summer solstice -- which they call Midsummer. It's a true summer celebration involving flower picking and dancing around a maypole. Women and girls make crowns of flowers symbolizing nature to bring good health throughout the year. The menu includes pickled herring, new potatoes and sour cream with schnapps to drink. Flowers, fish and potatoes are certainly a unique idea for a summer celebration.

In Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, they celebrate summer solstice or "Kupala" with rituals of purification. They hold a night of swimming to symbolize the cleansing of the soul. A bonfire is burned where mothers hope to heal sick children by burning their shirts. Couples holding hands jump over the flames of a bonfire to demonstrate bravery and faithfulness.

Nancy Gallagher has contributed this poem from Irish poet John O'Donohue. Dale spoke elegantly about John, his IRISH ways and the messages in his work at our April meeting..

For Longing

by John O'Donohue Blessed be the longing that brought you here

And quickens your soul with wonder. May you have the courage to listen to the voice of desire That disturbs you when you have settled for something safe

May you have the wisdom to enter generously into your own unease To discover the new direction your longing wants you to take.

May the forms of your belonging?in love, creativity, and friendship? Be equal to the grandeur and the call of your soul. May the one you long for long for you.

May your dreams gradually reveal the destination of your desire. May a secret Providence guide your thought and nurture your feeling. May your mind inhabit your life with the sureness with which your body inhabits the world. May your heart never be haunted by ghost structures of old damage.

May you come to accept your longing as divine urgency. May you know the urgency with which God longs for you.

~John O'Donohue, from "To Bless the Space Between Us."

......Here I am posing with Marci Shimoff, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Happy for No Reason. We are at the Chicago Book Expo of America and she is holding her new book, Inkspirations for Women: Color Your World Happy--30 Inspiring Designs to Nourish Your Heart and Renew Your Spirit. Did you know that her husband is a Transpersonal Psychologist? I didn't either. We got to talking and she has suggested that I may interview her for our Transcender newsletter!.....Besides the Expo events, I enjoyed walking in Grant Park and visiting a former college roommate in Rockford. Part of the adventure was taking the Lake Sue with Marci Shimoff Shore Limited train....The rest of my month of May was full of adventure and travel as well. Nancy Gallagher and I experienced the Women's Retreat at Chautauqua with Kaye Lindauer--the very last one! The month culminated in a wonderful family vacation at the Yacht Club Resort at Disney World. ALL of us (daughters, spouses and 3 grandchildren) were there.

.......Jo Anne Bakeman and Mark

Hoffmann have been vacationing in Nancy Gallagher at

Europe. England, Germany and Croatia and lazy days by the water

Chautauqua

were part of the agenda as well as visiting with her daugh-

ter, son-in-law and grand kids. They still had energy to go

camping when they got back home!

......Aziz Goksel will be visiting the U.K. after his journey to Turkey. He will be returning about the middle of July......Monica Fricke recently had a pleasant visit from her sister from Germany. Monica is facing another surgery in the fall

.........Michelle Frankel has just returned from 6 weeks in lovely Santa Fe, New Mexico. She took a workshop in pottery making and has returned with many new creations.

.....Ron Newman has a healer friend who went to Boston last weekend and worked on a baseball player who next time at bat hit the game-winning home run! That's a new kind of happy ending. Ron told him he should put "Home Run Massage" on his card. A similar story concerns a healer friend of his, Brian Whitehead, and how, after a treatment by him, a pro baseball player hit the ball out of the park his next time at bat. In addition to prayer and energy point massage, Brian uses the violet ray, biofeedback computer and also microcurrent technologies. There seems to be no limit to what such therapies can accomplish.

........Nick Poulos was recently in Philadelphia attending a Barbara Marciniak workshop. She channels the Pleiadians. A few days later he left for Quantum Healing Hypnosis Therapy training in the Ozarks.

....Cathleen Kelly has recently returned from the American Holistic Nurses Association Conference in Bonita Springs, Florida. Now she and Michael can start gathering wood for the big bonfire similar to the one pictured on page 2!

......From Joanne Verone: The May TPA meeting was a very interesting presentation by Dr. Kate Laska. She graciously opened her lovely home on Oneida Lake for our meeting. After a wonderful meal, we sat around her family room with a view of the lake and a warm cozy fire in the fireplace. She used a large singing bowl to allow us to go into a deep meditative state. Later, we shared our experiences with her and she did invoke the angels to be with us during contemplation. Dr. Kate is a Chiropractor in Mattydale. She incorporates many types of modalities. She also talked to us about the uses of Young Living Oils. She put the oil "fun"' on us and we did have a very informative and fun time. Thanks again to Dr. Kate for sharing her knowledge and home with our TPA group. It was nice to have Paul Greib, Robin Gross and some of Dr. Kate's, friends Kathy and Irene, join with us. Hope to see them again. Love to all...

.....From Mark Briggs re: May TPA meeting: Because my dog, Rusty, preferred to come with me and stay in the car, rather than stay at home alone, I parked where I doubted that people could hear him barking. I was astounded that Dr. Kate saw him in her meditation and described him!

.....From Gabrielle: just completed the Drum Circle Leadership Certificate offered by Jim Donovan. I attended the training at Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA. Hope to offer a drum circle at one of our future meetings. Unfortunately, I will miss the next meeting. I will be with my friend and her children in Washington, DC. Her son, age 12, received an invitation to a National Youth Leadership Conference. We all will drive him there and stay for an extended weekend doing sight seeing and visiting with my daughter and son-in-law. And my house is on the market and is shown. An exciting but exhausting process." Yeah, I am right now in Loretto. What a beautiful drive and place. I am drumming for 4 days. It's so uplifting and fun. I needed that after all the stress and hard work to get the house ready for the market. Its been as shown several times. I know we will receive soon a purchase offer. I am ready to move.
